We talk about how to keep our skin young, how to keep our hair shiny, and ways to ensure our bodies look great. Yet, when it comes to our genitals, nothing is said. Generally, we just don’t think about it and hope for the best. But, over the course of your life, your vagina goes through a lot. Sex, Childbirth, thrush and other infections. It needs looking after, just like the rest of you. Here are some great tips to help keep your vagina looking and feeling great.
Do Your Kegels
Kegel exercises help strengthen your pelvic floor muscles, and are especially important during, and after, pregnancy. Try to get into the habit of doing them every day, and tense the muscle for a little longer as you get better at it. Kegel exercises are great because you can do them whenever you want, no one needs to know.
Drink Plenty of Water
All your body functions need you to be well hydrated to function at their best. Drinking 8 glasses of water a day will help the skin around your vagina stay plump, and look bright. It will also help maintain your natural lubrication.
Did you know that your vagina is self-cleaning? Despite what you may have heard or read, there is no need to douche. All this will do is remove your natural acidity, making infections more likely. Some people find even using scented shower gels affects their PH levels, leading to regular thrush outbreaks, so find a mild, fragrance free soap.
Be Active in Sex
Sex can be a great workout. The more active you are, the better the workout for your vaginal muscles. You’ll also have a lot more fun!
The worst thing for your vagina is an infection. Always practice safe sex, and make sure both you and your partner get tested before you consider making love without condoms. While most sexually transmitted infections can be easily treated, some lead to lasting complications, and can affect how your vagina looks and feels, or even lead to infertility.
Maintain a Healthy Weight
Gaining, or losing a lot of weight can lead to stretch marks or sagging skin. The skin around your vagina is the same. To keep it looking great try not to let your weight fluctuate too quickly.
If you are worried about the appearance of your vagina, don’t let this affect your confidence, or your sex life. Vaginoplasty is becoming much more common and readily available.
Every time you orgasm, either through penetration or clitoral stimulation, blood rushes to your genitals. This keeps them rejuvenated and youthful.
Regular Check Ups
If you have any itching, changes in skin color or smell, if there’s any unexplained bleeding, or things just don’t feel right, get it checked out. Don’t automatically assume it’s an STI as there are many other explanations, from thrush to lichen sclerosis. Remember, doctors have seen it all before, so don’t be embarrassed.
Not only will these tips keep your vagina young, they will also keep it healthy, help boost your confidence and make you feel great. Looking after your vagina is just as important as looking after the rest of your body, so don’t neglect it.
