7 Steps to a Healthier You

7 Steps to a Healthier You

If you’re like most people, you know that you could use some improvement in your daily health habits. Maybe you like to indulge in fast food too often, or you reach for a cigarette when you’re trying to quit. Let’s face it – living a healthy lifestyle isn’t easy; if it were, we’d all be a size four and look like we’ve just stepped out of the pages of a beauty magazine.

If you truly want to change your life and are sick and tired of being sick and tired, here are 7 steps to get you on the path to lasting health and happiness:

  1. Find Your ‘Why”: You won’t make any lasting changes until you understand why you want to change. Do you want to lose weight to have more energy? Do you want to quit smoking, so you can live to see your grandchildren grow up? Find your motivating factors and write them down in a journal. Keep your journal where you can see it every day. Some people find that vision boards give them the visual cues they need to keep going on those days when you feel like quitting.

  2. Quit Smoking: You already know that smoking decreases your lifespan considerably while accelerating the aging process, along with a host of other negative side effects, so why are you still smoking? The truth is, it’s hard to quit, especially if you’ve been a smoker for many years. Luckily, there are prescription medications that can help you with cravings. A more natural way to quit is to switch to vaping or hookah smoking.

  3. Increase your Confidence: When you feel confident on the inside, you will naturally exude confidence on the outside, and the whole world will notice. Buy some stylish new clothes, or jazz up your jewelry collection. Are you afraid to smile because your teeth are in bad shape? See a dentist about getting implants or even a whitening toothpaste. Are you afraid to greet new people because you suffer from sweaty hands in social settings? Try a sweat blocking product to help keep your hands dry. Do you suffer from eczema and are afraid to go out in public? There are creams and prescription medications that can help. Bottom line: do what you need to do to improve your confidence, so you can enjoy your social life.

  4. Clean up your eating habits: Are you often tired and run-down, especially after eating? Do you find yourself going out for fast food more than once or twice a week? Get real with your diet – go to the grocery store, buy ‘clean’ foods (unprocessed lean meats, veggies, and fruits, whole grains) and cook up a healthy meal. Can’t cook? Take a cooking class – seriously. Eating a healthy diet will make you look and feel better almost instantly. Toss the sugar and sauté some veggies, brown rice and chicken breast for dinner!

  5. Exercise daily: Has it been awhile since you’ve gotten up off the couch after dinner? Start with just 15 minutes a day and go for a walk around the block. Consider getting a dog so you won’t have an excuse to not do it. Once you get into the habit of moving, up your game. Join a gym or train for a 5k; you can even join a local volleyball or baseball team. Don’t think of exercise as a chore; find something you love doing and do it!

  6. Make meditation a priority: You need your downtime, no matter how old you are, or what type of job you have. Take a few minutes out of your day first thing in the morning to meditate, pray, journal, etc. about the day ahead. Prayer and meditation can set your day off on the right note so you feel ready to take on whatever challenges lie ahead.

  7. Get your ZZZ’s: If you are used to binge-watching your favorite Netflix shows till 2 a.m., make a commitment to stop today! You need your rest to stay at your best. Generally, experts recommend 7-9 hours a night for most adults.

Now that you know the steps to a healthier you, choose at least one thing you’re going to do differently today and get started!
