Highlights in the History of Horses

During the Ice Age, herds of horses roamed every continent, except Antarctica. But sometime during this era, horses mysteriously vanished from North America. One theory explaining their disappearance is that horses migrated west to Siberia across a land bridge.

The people who lived in central Asia were the first to tame and ride horses. In A.D. 1519, horses reappeared in North America. They were brought to Mexico by the invading Spanish conquistadores (conquerors).

Roundup of Horse Facts

  • There are about 75 million horses in the world.
  • A horses height is measured in hands. One hand equals about four inches.
  • A foal usually inherits its father’s (sire’s) looks, but its mother’s (dam’s) constitution and personality.
  • Horses have a keen sense of smell, hearing and direction. Their skin is sensitive and will respond to the slightest touch.

It Looks Like a Horse

It looks like a horse. It acts like a horse. But is it a horse?

The creature I’m talking about is the unicorn. Unicorns have a horn on their foreheads. They can be of any color. Have you watched the movie ‘The Last Unicorn’? It was so sad (And old). The movie was about a unicorn who is left alone when the other unicorns are captured by an evil wizard.
