Animal Shelter
Kandy
Every
Tuesday my aunt Kandy works at an animal shelter. She socializes
animals, mainly cats. Many animals are dropped off at the animal
shelter every day. Kandy says "It is amazing to see how
many animals are at the door in the morning, already dropped
off before the shelter is open to avoid the dropping off fees."
Animals there can be skinny or very sick, from lack of care
or food. It is sad to see all these animals starved and ill
treated. Kandy says that most of the reason for ill treated
animals who are dropped off at the shelter before it opens is
because the owners don't have enough money to support these
innocent animals.
One
Tuesday, Kandy said goodbye to her cats and got in the car and
went to the shelter to help. When she got there, there was a
1 year old calico cat in a cage. She had never seen this pretty
cat before and dug up her file. After seeing her and petting
her she fell in love and decided to adopt her. That night, she
put this cat in the cage and headed home. Being a cat lover,
Kandy has adopted Tabatha (another calico cat), Nicolaus (as
a kitten he had his throat cut and was left next to a very busy
street), Kayla (who Kandy found on a rainy day outside her apartment
door, starving and soaking wet), and Molly (a house cat who
was put out in a barn and not fed because she was supposed to
hunt rats and was very unhappy). Now, the newest member of Kandy's
Family is Jasmine, the cat she fell in love with that Tuesday.
The
shelter Kandy works at only euthanizes animals if they are miserable
and they have been there for months without being looked at,
or are very sick. At most shelters there are a few hamsters,
guinea pigs, and bunnies. There are also a couple of horses
and ponies, donkeys and mules. There are dozens of puppies and
dogs and kittens and cats. Sometimes, there are even even exotic
animals like pigs, pigeons, alligators, snakes, and fish.
"For
every cat to have a home, each household must have eight cats."
Kandy tells me. If you love animals, and are thinking of getting
a pet, don't pay money for a purebred who has a good life ahead
of it. Go to your local shelter and rescue an abused or stranded
animal. Kandy assures me you'll be glad you did.
