A
Whale of a Good Time!
Do you love whales and dolphins? I do! Whales and dolphins live
all over the world, in every ocean. They are beautiful, very
smart and are mammals, just like us! People, whales and dolphins
-- and all mammals breath air. They are warmblooded. They bear
live young which are nursed by their mothers. Hunting whales
and dolphin has pushed many of their kind almost to extinction.
But thanks to conservation groups and kids, lawmakers have been
forced to begin protecting these beautiful creatures. There's
more work to be done to save them. But here's my favorite whale
and dolphin sites, facts, books and pictures.
Whale and Dolphin Trivia
Facts!
- There are about
75 species of cetaceans, including the whales, dolphins,
and porpoises.
- Beluga whales
sing! They are called "sea canaries" because that's what
their songs sound like.
- Blue whales
are the biggest animal that has ever lived on Earth. They
are even bigger than any dinosaur.
- Seven species
of whales are protected under the Endangered Species Act
by the United States. They are the blue whale, the bowhead
whale, the fin whale, the humpback whale, the northern right
whale, the sei whale and the sperm whale.
- The gray whale
was on the endangered species list, but it isn't any more,
thanks to people leaving them alone.
- Some whales
are lungers--they take in huge gulps of water and fish at
the same time
- Other whales
are skimmers--they swim along with their mouths open, and
strain the water out before they swallow their fish dinner
- Humpback whales
blow nets of bubbles around schools of fish to catch them.
Then they swim up through the bubble net to catch their
food
Great Links!
One
of the best pages for original dolphin photos and information
has been put together by Sally from Australia.
Her site is part of a dolphin webring, so you can go to many
other dolphin sites from there as well.
One
of the first great women in the ecology movement was Rachel
Carson. Her book, The Sea Around Us, brought the
beauty and fragility of the ocean environment to a world-wide
audience.
The
Whale Club has a fine
collection of activities and links for those who love whales,
dolphins and other marine mammals.
Everybody's
favorite dolphin is Flipper. After many movies and TV shows,
he's still going strong. You can find Flipper's Website here.
You've
seen his art, now visit his website. Whyland Kids has news, art, info, and fun
for those interested in saving our oceans. It's presented by
the renowned ocean-ife artist, James Wyland.
A concerned
class of fifth-graders studied the threatened habitat of the
gray whale nursery. See their art, poems and thoughts.
The
Pacific Humpback Whale is featured in The Virtual Whale Project with
photos, 3-D animations, and sounds!
Themepark Hall

There are ocean theme
parks and seaquariums all over the world. Many of them have
great, informative, picture filled web sites. For a whale of
