A set usually has at least 15 dolls in it, including those representing the Emperor and Empress, their ministers, ladies in waiting, five court musicians and court officials -all clad colorfully in resplendent ancient court costumes of silk which are based on Heian period court styles. They are on display in the best room of the house for several days and then packed into boxes with care and put away until the following year.
