Martin Luther King: I Have a Dream for the New Millennium Contest

Grand Prize Winner
I Have a Dream for the New Millennium

May we walk the paths not walked before.
May we keep the old paths worn.
May we love the people unlike us.
May our beings not be torn.
May we live to love and love to live.
May that love and life abound.
May those values we’ve always held strong stay
‘cross the common ground.

May hands be held, and not held down.
May they tie across the lands.
May the simplest joys be recognised
So we’ll remain holding hands.
May war be found only in history.
May its trials and traumas cease.
May the battles not be glorified.
May humans understand peace.

May we willingly forget that grudge.
May the slate once more be clean.
May we celebrate our differences.
May elder converse with teen.
May our fantasies be contemplated.
May we not push dreams aside.
May we accept changes readily
But may our fate not be denied.

May technology not conquer all.
May we never give up lives.
May we hold onto our husbands.
May we hold onto our wives.
May we not lose vision of our faith.
May we help those who soon may.
May we rely on our natural gifts.
May we always seize the day.

And in the new Millennium,
May you take this brand new start.
May you venture on the untrodden path
With hope inside your heart.

I looked into the future with a crystal heart. The heart was glowing with a bright future for the world. I looked closer into the heart and what I saw were people. People of many different cultures, races, looks, and ideas. They are people just like today, but I sensed something different about all these people. Something srong and admirable. These people, despite all their differences, were accepting each other and joining as one in love. The love was just like the crystal heart. With the world joining together everything was a lot more happy, clean, and full of warmth. I started going down into this perfect world to a grocery store. I walked to the beverage isle because I was kinda getting thirsty. I grabbed an apple juice, and it caught my attention that there were no alcohol products. I kept walking to see what was in the beauty aisle. The old world made me think that I was ugly. When I got there I saw all the make-up products, but they didn't seem essential to have in this perfect world so I kept walking on.

I was starting to feel good about myself, and wanted to go home and watch a movie. I picked up THE DEAD POET'S SOCIETY, and noticed there weren't any R ratings on any of the boxes. Finally I made my way to the checkout counter. Next to it there were no tobacco products, no "National Enquirers" telling the public lies, and best of all, there weren't any magazines telling women they can be happier if they weighed 20 pounds less. I walked out of the grocery store with a big relief. It was a little grocery store, with only little changes in it, but it felt great to be a in a place without the pressure of the old world. Then I realized I had to get back to the world I belong to, but with the attitude that I was going to do my best to pull together everyone I can to create a more perfect world.

Meet the writer! Here's Melissa's Biography

My dream is that the world will love each other and speak in peace. I hope that people will learn how to get along, and I hope that people will have more pride than they have disposition. I have a dream that everyone in the world will learn that we are made out of the same flesh and blood, that we have nothing different in our lives. I hope we can learn to treat others the way we would like to be treated. I hope that people will respect their elders and set good examples for ones smaller then themselves. I hope that people that are disabled will have more friends and a better life. I dream that people who act helpless learn how to cooperate and help as much as they can. I hope that every single person in the whole world can have equal freedom and equal rights.

I dream that we all live under a roof, and that we all have some food on our table each day. I hope that journalists and reporters and editors of the world will tell every single word in truth, and not tell a lie. Our history is a fragile piece of glass that we need to learn to help our future grow. If broken, we will all forget things that are the most important things in our world today and in the future. I hope that the rich will feed the poor. I hope there is another Princess Diana out there that is willing to help. I hope that our armies and troups will never again have to fight, because peace enters our world. I hope that God will touch us all with his hand and protect us as long as we protect each other.

Sidra, 9, Missouri
Meet the writer! Here's Sidra's Biography

I imagine the new millennium as a new chance for people that weren't happy in the old millennium to start a new happy life. I don't think that all the things that people imagine about the new millennium (like communicating with aliens) will come true. Of course we will develop our technology but I think that people will keep old traditions. Maybe people will find a new way to protect nature like some magical harmless powder to make the plants better without causing them any harm. I hope scientists will find cures to the most awful diseases and will come up with potions that will prolong people's lives and let them enjoy their good years longer.

I think that we will use our computers more and more as the time goes by and it could be that all the children will write and study with a computer instead of school books and pencils, but will continue to read literature. I think that in the far future flight to the moon will be like a trip abroad today, though I really don't think that we should build on the moon because the moon is also part of nature. I think that some people will continue to hate each other but the police will have more ability to deal with it. And of course bad people will continue to start wars but may be there will be more people willing to stop them.

Maria, 13, Israel

I have many hopes and dreams for the future. One of my dreams is that someone will discover a cure for diseases like cancer and if you get cancer you can go to your doctor and get medicine and no one will die from it. I also hope that in countries like Romania, less fortunate children will get enough money to have clean water and healthy food to eat to stop many young children dying in poverty. I have a dream that there will be World peace. especially in Northern Ireland, If I can accept peace I hope that other people can too, and someday Northern Ireland will be a mixed country and work together with the rest of the world in peace.

Leanne, 12, Northern Ireland

The world, and everything in it, is changing everyday. The change may be small, but its changing. Our knowledge is expanding, technology is growing, and the world is becoming a stronger, and better civilized place. Everyone was predicting about what would happen this millennium. We have hit the "new" millennium, and some of those thoughts, have come true. But what about the next millennium: 3000? Imagine what it would be like when we hit the year 3000. . . I think that technology is going to take over the world. Look at all the things scientists are creating right now: I don't know about trying to rebuild the human brain but for computers, flying cars, clones using dna, future homes, etc.. I think that would be great!

The perfect world would have total peace. There would be no bombing, ex. Kosovo, and presidents/leaders would get along, ex. Clinton & Saddam. There would be no hunger, ex. Africa. It's so hard seeing children starving and having no home. It's even worse when the reason for these conditions is because of the selfish and greedy leaders of their country. Drug abuse would end. The only way to get drugs is to get a prescription and there would be special machines that the medication come out of which would allow exact amount of the medication instead of overdoses and things like that. Cigarettes would be vanished. Cigarettes are not helping the world at all, so why not just get rid of them?

I also think that there would be flying cars!! We would have air traffic. Except you would need special license. We would "sky police" and "sky traffic lights", etc. I also think that every home would be powered with electricity. And every home would have access to the internet so that you could communicate with people from all over the world. The future will also have no racism or prejudice. Everyone would get along. Martin Luther King Jr's dream would come true, "No one will be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character." I think his speech was beautiful and really moving. I think that he was one of the biggest steps towards a non-violent world, and even though he is gone, his soul is still with us.

Michelle, 13 Massachusetts
Meet the writer! Here's Michelle's Biography

I imagine the perfect world of the future would not have any wars or fighting, and no disease. Girls would study "herstory" instead of history which tends to focus on men and wars. There would be robots to put away groceries and to do other household chores. Instead of airplanes, there would be time machines to zap you from one place to another and from one time to another. Colonies would be established on the moon and other planets and people could live there or visit on their vacations. Scientists would change mosquitoes so that they wouldn't bite humans, but would still be around to provide food for spiders. If children and adults were sad or sick or lonely, there would be special places called "safe heaven on earth" they could go to. These places would have kind, professional people to provide quick and free help and a listening ear for anyone who needed it. It would also have friendly animals around because animals make people feel better. Also, I would like to develop a system to communicate with the animals, because they have feelings and thoughts too.

Kasia, 8, Virginia

So much has happened in the last century alone for the role of women in society, let alone the last thousand years. Not only have we gotten the right to vote, the right to own land, and the right to work in sometimes an all male work environment, but we have also paved the way for future generations. We have proven that women's thoughts and opinions should be respected and listened to, not shrugged off and taken as unimportant. We have shown that this isn't a man's world and the home isn't the only place that we are able to succeed. Half this world is women and it's sad that it took this long for us to get the respect we so rightfully deserve.

This doesn't mean though that the fight is over. My hope is that women and girls will continue to fight for equal opportunities in the future. My wish is that we will no longer be seen as objects or prizes, but as people with emotions and feelings. Also, my wish is for the criticism of teens in general to stop. The truth is not all teens are the Dylan Klybolds and the Eric Harris'. Yes, it's sad to see that our generation has so much hate for each other, that we can carry guns to schools and destroy lives, but there is also so much good that our generation is doing that is changing the world. We are building homes for the homeless, feeding the poor, helping the weak, and comforting the lost. Yes, the Columbines do exist, but they are grossly outnumbered. Yet, the media tends to dwell on the negative. I encourage our generation to change this new Millennium by effecting someone else. If we start the gift of love now in our classes and in our lives, that will lead to love in our nation and in our government. We have come far in the last 2000 years, but we still have a long way to go.

Sara, 16, Texas

Will there ever be a perfect world? This is what people say everyday, when they see the poor and the homeless lining the streets, and when they hear about the war on the radio. I imagine in the future, nearly everything will be electronic. At the rate new inventions are hitting the stores, the whole world could be computerized! I'd say girls and teens will still be the same as they are today, only really rich. The music will be all techno style, and no words. It's kind of like the biggest thing since classical music. The clothes will pretty much be the same, except everyone will be wearing silver, like tin-foil. Toys will be the same, only railway trains and toy cars will be 'old time toys'. The main subject in school would be computer class, and nearly all adults will be working with computers. Robots would clean up houses and computers would replace teachers. It all sounds very techno, but that's what I see. Women in every country in the world will be treated respectably. Most women in the world are treated the right way, but in some countries there are still some things which need to be sorted out. Racism will continue for a while, but soon will stop.

Sarah, 12, Ireland
Meet the writer! Here's Sarah's Biography

I think the Perfect World of the Future and the next Millennium would have constant peace reigning all over. All hunger and homelessness would be abolished. No more weapons would exist and there would be no need for them because everyone would get along no matter how shy you are, or how short you are, or anything bias. Everyone would be treated equally and have the exact same rights. All factories that hire children, would never be allowed to do so anymore. Although it is illegal in the United States, in a lot of foreign countries they still have that injust law of being able to hire children. No more animals would become extinct and there would never be any violence. No one would ever litter, but try to clean up the pollution we humans have already caused. Although no matter what we do, a perfect world will never be possible, this is an example of mine.

Overall, AGW girls want a world of peace and total equality for all people. Everyone wants a clean environment. Animals and the rain forest should be respected and preserved. No one should be homeless or poor. Girls would like cars to fly, computers to replace schoolbooks and robot maids to keep things tidy. A woman should be President. Girls should have equal opportunities to play sports and excel in any job they choose. We got soooo many entries! All the submissions were heartfelt and wonderful. It was hard to select just a few. Our future is in good hands with our readers! Thanks for entering the contest. We hope you enjoyed reading the winning entries. Thanks again to Zara.m, England for this contest.
