Help! I Hate My Looks!

The Problem...

Dear Study Smart: I think I need a makeover. I am not crazy about the way I look. What do you think I could do?

Corinnne, 13
Dear Corinnne: the bodies we are born with are one of the few things we cannot do a lot to change. A body is like a car. You can wax and polish it, dress it up with leather seats and soup up the engine, but no amount of positive thinking will ever change the basic shape, type and equipment that comes with that car.

I have a handicap called clubhand. The fingers of my right hand are different, half the size of my left hand. I am also short and round in shape, just like my mother, my grandmother and her mother before her. No amount of exercise, diet, makeup, fancy hairdoos or clothing will ever change my basic looks.

But I have learned, over time, to be comfortable with myself by accepting what I look like. I'm very cute and fun. I don't dwell on what I "should, would, or could" look like. Makeovers are fun. Experimenting with hair, makeup and clothes is a fabulous hobby.

But first, learn to be crazy about the way you look without any fixing up at all. I know it sounds impossible. But if you can learn to look in the mirror and accept the fact that there is no such thing as perfect, and you look pretty darned good just the way you are, you will have a much happier life. Now, invite your friends over for a makeup and hair party. Or go to the mall and try on a new look.

But after that, take a look at the health of your soul. People are attracted to other people who are positive, have goals, are good listeners and like who they are. If you want to work on any one thing that will change how you look, work on how you feel. Check out Choices by Mindy Bingham. I think it will be a real help.
