Study Smart:First Aid

Starting a New School

The Problem...

Dear Study Smart: Last year I started a new school. I was shy at first and I really did not want to go. So...I threw fits and acted really immature. I did not like anyone because I wanted to go to my old school. But soon I realized that no one liked me because I was acting like a brat. So I told every one I was sorry and now I have a lot of new friends! -- Andi C, Michigan

A Solution

Dear Andi: Thanks for sharing your experiences. Going to a new school is really hard. But here's some survival tips that might make it easier next time.

  • See if you can check out the school before it opens. If they have an orientation, go to it.

  • Find out where everything is. Like your classes and the bathrooms.

  • That way you won't have to be asking everyone and feel silly.

  • Break the ice. Be the first to introduce yourself.

  • Try to remember the other kids names.

  • Start conversations. Ask the kids about themselves. What they like.

  • Smile.

  • Don't be in a rush to make friends. Get to know everyone first.

  • Don't forget why you're there. To learn.

  • Stay on top of your schoolwork and homework. Don't let the blues overtake you.

  • Get involved. Join some clubs or activities.

  • Don't forget your old friends. Write them. Stay in touch.
