Ask Yourself About Volunteering

The Spice Girls sing about it every day. Girls have the power to solve real problems, make a difference and change the world! Girls everywhere are teaching other girls to read, giving shelter to the homeless, feeding the hungry, saving wildlife and making the world a better place. There are so many people who want and need your time, talent, skills and help!

Q. But what do I have I can give?
A. Lots! Sit down and make a list of what you're good at. What are your special skills and talents? What do you like to do? Do you like to talk? Volunteer at a museum, day care center or retirement home.
Q. Where do I volunteer? What's the best place to go?
A. First, figure out what's really important to you. Do you care about the environment? Is the fact that animals suffer, or that people are lonely and hungry bother you? Then get moving, girl! There's lots of people in your community who feel the same way you do.
Q. How much time will it take?
A. As much as you want to give. Don't do more. If you only have an hour a week or an hour a month, give that. Tune in and help, but don't burn out.
Q. Could volunteering help me in my career someday?
A. Sure! Want to be a vet? Volunteer at an animal shelter. Want to be a doctor or a nurse? Volunteer at a hospital. Want to be a psychiatrist or a social worker? Volunteer at a shelter or retirement home. Want to be a scientist? Volunteer at a science museum. Want to be a zoologist? Check with your local zoo or animal park. They may have a volunteer spot just for you! Lots of places accept help from the brightest stars of the future -- kids of all ages!
Q. Can this help me get a job later?
A. Yes! Many of the places that have volunteers hire their volunteers first when jobs open up. And, a letter of recommendation from a volunteer group means a lot to an employer. If you took the time to care, show up on time, dress neatly and act responsibly on a volunteer gig (that means call if you can't show or are going to be late!) then you'll make a great employee. Everyone wants a worker who is responsible, willing to do any job, and can learn new skills.
