Meet Marsha Evans:
1998 Update: Rear Admiral to Executive Director
Girl Scouts of America

Marsha Johnson Evans is now National Executive Director of Girl Scouts of the U.S.A., the largest organization for girls in the world. She assumed her position on January 12, 1998.

Ms. Evans retired after a 29-year career in the United States Navy, attaining the rank of Rear Admiral. She has been at the forefront of increasing opportunities for women in the Navy, including opening the full range of operational assignments. Most recently, she served as Superintendent of the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, Calif. For a part of her tenure there, she concurrently served as Director of the George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies in Garmisch, Germany. She also headed the Navy's worldwide recruiting organization from 1993 to 1995.

Earlier, Ms. Evans served as Chief of Staff at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.; as Commanding Officer, Naval Station, Treasure Island, San Francisco, Calif.; and as Chief of Staff, Naval Base, San Francisco, Calif.; among other positions.

A native of Springfield, Ill., Ms. Evans, who is known as "Marty," grew up in a military family. Her father, a Navy Chief Petty Officer, inspired her career goals. She was active in Girl Scouting from seventh through ninth grades, and attained the rank of Curved Bar, the highest achievement in Girl Scouting at the time.

She earned a bachelor's degree from Occidental College in Los Angeles and a master's degree in law and diplomacy from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University in Medford, Mass. She also completed studies at The National War College in Washington, D.C., and The Naval War College in Newport, R.I. She is a former White House Fellow and a member of Phi Beta Kappa.

Ms. Evans enjoys an active lifestyle and spends her leisure time traveling, skiing, jogging, and kayaking. She lives in New York City with her husband, Gerard R. Evans, a retired Navy jet pilot.
