Lauren: Do you have to go to sea much? What's that like?
Adm. Evans: Many Navy people serve at sea duty. But also, a lot of Navy people serve on land. We have over 350 ships, and [both] men and women now serve on those ships. They could be flying planes from the ships, or working in the propulsion plant of the ship to make the power that makes it go. So we have several thousand women serving now on ships.
It's really interesting because those ships go around the world. A lot of people that are serving on land, like I am, are kind of jealous of the young women and men who are serving on ships. They get to make visits to all kinds of places around the world.
A ship is like a city. When a ship is operating at sea you've got to have somebody who's doing the cooking for everybody, somebody doing the laundry. If there are missiles on the ship, you have to have somebody taking care of them. Some ships have aircraft flying on and off them. You have all kinds of machinery and equipment [that has to be serviced].
You have to have somebody predicting the weather so that you know not to take the ship into a storm. So there's all kinds of different jobs on the ship. What happens is, everybody pulls together. Everybody does his or her job and it all pulls together like a big team. But on this team, like on one of our big aircraft carriers, you could have five thousand people -- it's a pretty big team.
[That team is like a community.] You have people who have successes, you have people who have problems. You have ministers on the ship [to help people], doctors on the ship -- everything you need. It's like a little city.
