Meet Marsha Evans:
Women Who Rock the World
Career Preparation

Lauren: How did you get ready for your career? What kind of classes did you take in school?

Adm. Evans: When I was in high school, I took the general college preparatory courses -- social studies, history, English, chemistry, biology, algebra, geometry and physical education. That's important because Navy men and women have to be fit. That's how I prepared myself in high school.

Then I went to college and completed my college degree. There I studied general subjects. A little bit of science, some math, history, political science, social studies, geology, a lot of courses in English and history. So, general college courses.

Lauren: Did you join ROTC in high school?

Adm. Evans: No, because I'm a little bit older. In the 1960's when I was in high school and college, those opportunities weren't open for young women. I think that's the best part about today, is that young women have a range of opportunities like NJROTC in high school and ROTC in college. If I could start all over, I think I would do something like that.

Lauren: Why did you choose the Navy over any other career?

Adm. Evans: When I was trying to decide what to do, I talked to a lot of different people. I talked to career counselors -- my college had a wonderful career center to help students make those choices.

I think it's really important that when you have those opportunities to have some career counseling, to take those opportunities. You learn more rather than less about all the different things you might want to do. They talked to me about careers that I had no idea about. So that was really good, to learn about different kinds of things I might do.

Then I talked to the Navy recruiter. What I really liked about the Navy was, I wanted to travel. I thought it would be fun. I was living in California while I was in college, and I thought it would be fun to travel to maybe Europe, or Asia.
