Lauren: What's the biggest challenge you've faced in your job? What did you do about it?
Adm. Evans: One of the good things about the Navy is that we're assigned a job for between two and three years. In my career, I've been in the Navy for twenty-eight years and I've probably had fifteen different jobs during those twenty-eight years.
I think everybody has [that moment] when they get a new job and have to go meet new responsibilities in a new location. You think, "This is going to be a really big job. I'm not sure I'm going to be quite ready for it." [And in life], you're always being challenged.
So, the toughest part of my career has been, you get a new job, and you say, "Oh, gosh, I'm going to have to handle a bigger responsibility." It's like growing up. At home you're given a small job at first, and then a bigger job, and pretty soon you're helping even more in the house with the family responsibilities. Sometimes you just have to keep it in mind that having new responsibilities, additional responsibilities, is part of growing up and moving up through an organization.
