Meet Marsha Evans:
Women Who Rock the World
A Day on My Job

Lauren: What is a day like in your work? What kind of things do you get to do?

Adm. Evans: A good thing about my work is that no two days are alike. Let me just tell you some of the things I do. Last week, for example, [Friday] was a wonderful day. I started in the morning. All of our sailors who work here at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey -- every Friday morning they have what we call a "formation" and they have "quarters." That's where everybody stands in formation in their good uniforms. Then the boss, or the leader, talks to them about what's going to happen through the day, sets the "plan of the day," as we say.

So I went to quarters in the morning with all the enlisted sailors. We had a ceremony where we advanced some of the sailors, promoted them. That was kind of fun, to promote people. That means that they're going to have more responsibility.

Then I went to some meetings. Unfortunately I have to go to a lot of meetings. But I did have a chance to sit in on a classroom, to hear some instruction from [one of our] professors.

Later in the day, I went over and did an inspection of the barracks where our men and women live. If you're single and you don't live in an apartment out in town, which some of our sailors do, you could also live in the barracks. It's like a dormitory [where] two people share a room. They have really nice rooms that all their stuff goes into. So I went and inspected the rooms. That's always fun because they're allowed to decorate their rooms. They have their own personal things there. There was one room decorated with Dallas Cowboys, and then another was filled with a woman's art hobbies. So that was fun to not only inspect the rooms, [and] make sure they're clean and neat, but to see their interests. The most fun part of the day was, I got to throw the first pitch out at a local baseball game. So those are the fun things I get to do.

Sometimes I take trips, fly to Washington DC and go on a business trip like I'm sure some of [your] parents do. Every day is a little different.
