Meet Marsha Evans:
Women Who Rock the World
My Life: Looking Back

Lauren: What were you like when you were a girl?

Adm. Evans: When I was a girl, I loved to travel. I was really fortunate because my dad was in the Navy, so we got to travel and have new experiences. That was exciting.

I was in the Girl Scouts when I grew up. I was in the Brownies and I became a Girl Scout, a Senior Girl Scout -- I know they've changed the structure a little bit, but that [experience] was really important to me. I liked to camp.

I was a really good swimmer. I am a good swimmer. I took swimming lessons for as long as I can remember. Then I earned my senior life-saving and my water-safety instructor [certificates], and that was a good combination hobby/recreational activity. When I got into college I was able to be a lifeguard at our local community swimming pool. That was a wonderful way to take something I really love doing and then also get a summer job.

I used to earn money by baby-sitting and then I earned some money by helping someone with housekeeping. I didn't enjoy that as much, but like a lot of people, I wanted to earn a little money for college and also for spending money.

One of my hobbies happened to be sewing. One year, I was in the Singer Sewing contest. That was kind of fun. In the summer between seventh and eighth grade I made a suit with a pink blouse. I still remember it. It won the local competition in Phoenix, Arizona, that year. That's a hobby that I've found that's a lifelong hobby. I don't have too much time now to do it, but I find it very rewarding.

In my later life I began to ski. I really love to snow ski. I run, and only recently here in Monterey I've begun to go kayaking. So I'm on the water. Even though I'm not out on a ship, I'm out in a kayak. And I really love to read. That's one of my absolute favorites. I really enjoy biographies.

Lauren: Do you have any pets?

Adm. Evans: My husband and I wish we had a dog. But, I travel a lot, so it's a little bit hard. You know what we get to do? We have friends who have a dog and they travel. So they let us take care of the dog when they travel, so it's sort of like having a dog for a couple of days each month. So that's fun.

Lauren: What's your favorite ice cream or treat?

Adm. Evans: Every ice cream is a favorite as far as I'm concerned. It's my favorite dessert. I like ice cream that has nuts and chocolate. Coconut and chocolate chip are my favorite.
