Adm. Evans: I [have] a fair number of different kinds of role models. I look at women who've been in sports, women like Donna deVerona, the swimmer, and I think about becoming a world champion swimmer. How you have to really want to be successful in that regard. You have to practice. You have to have a commitment, and you have to do your best every day.
So I've looked at women in sports because I think that being successful, really, is the culmination of working very hard and having a goal and working at it on a daily basis.
Some women in politics that I think have been very important are people like Margaret Thatcher, who was the Prime Minister of England. It was very exciting to see her. She's a woman who's very principled -- she's a leader. For me, being a little bit older, there weren't quite as many women [having] world level leadership opportunities. So women leaders like Margaret Thatcher are very inspirational to me.
I've had some male role models too. I look at people like General George Marshall, who has had so many wonderful accomplishments. He was, of course, a General in the Army during World War II. But then he was head of the American Red Cross, he was the Secretary of State, and he was a man who worked very, very hard to make the right decisions. He was principled, a man of extraordinary integrity, and that's always been very, very important [to me]. Those are some examples of my role models.
