Lauren: Have you ever run into prejudice against women? Do you have any advice on how to handle that?
Adm. Evans: One of the problems that I've seen is that, because there were so few women in the Navy in the past, people who've never worked with women before, you had to prove yourself with them. At first, that made me kind of angry. Then, I finally decided that you can only be angry if you let yourself be angry about it.
What you have to do is just go in there and do your very best. Chances are, you're going to be very successful. In about a week, somebody's going to forget the fact that you're a woman and treat you like you're a "shipmate," as we say in the Navy.
The number of women in the Navy today is growing all the time. The way we've been able to change people's attitudes about women in the Navy is that more and more women have done a really good job, and people now say, "Gee, a woman can do that job." So that's been really important. I try not to focus on the negative part of it. I just do the best job I can, and that opens doors for other women.
