Adm. Evans: What initially interested me in the Navy was that I knew that Navy men and women were serving around the world, so I thought that might be fun to do for a little bit.
Lauren: Did you get to travel?
Adm. Evans: Oh, I did! In my first assignment, I was stationed in Washington, D.C., and that was very exciting to be in the nation's capital. I did all the tourist things. When I wasn't working, I'd be at the Smithsonian, or tour the Capitol [Building] and the White House and all those great places. I went to the concerts that the National Symphony did on the Capitol steps. So that was fun.
Then, [on] my second assignment, I was stationed in Japan at a Navy base near Tokyo. That was really neat, because I could learn to speak some Japanese. I'm not very good at it, but I could speak some Japanese, and I got to meet many Japanese people and visit all kinds of tourist sites in Japan. That was fun.
Later on in my career, I got to live in London. That was a whole lot of fun. I got to do all of the touristy things, see the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace... the things you usually only read about or see on TV about foreign countries. When you're in the Navy you get to do things like that.
Lauren: That sounds like fun!
Adm. Evans: Well, it is! Even when I haven't lived overseas, I've gotten to make visits on official duty, so I've been all around the world, literally. That's been very exciting.
