Sara: What's your day-to-day life like at work?
Diane: No two days are ever exactly the same. Today I came in and got the mammal records from next door. Now I'm putting them into my computer. I just finished doing the same thing with the birds. Mondays are a little heavy because there's three days, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, worth of animal records to track.
Today I'm working on a permit. I'm applying for a permit to import manatees [a plant-eating, aquatic animal with flippers and a broad, flat tail] from Guyana to San Diego. That's quite a long, involved process. I'm putting together all the biological data that the permit office, that's the Fish and Wildlife Service, will need to grant that service.
Then I'm going to work on a long range plan for our organization. There's a lot of employees working on different facets of the plan, so we'll all be working together on that.
Looking at my calendar, I've got some phone calls to make to people in Fish and Wildlife, and another fellow that I'm trying to have join us down in Guyana on our next trip.
So, I'm planning for future trips and projects and keeping records, documenting the past and doing some other things for the Society in general. It's fun.
