Shards of Honor
This is a great adventure and love story, with genuine conflicts and
characters you'll care about. As the first "Miles Vorkosigan" book,
you'll see how his parents met, and how Miles was injured before he
could even be born. This is a wonderful introduction to a
great series.
Nebula Award, Best Novel of 1988)
Falling Free
Leo Graf was just your average highly efficient engineer: mind your
own business, fix what's wrong and move on to the next job.
Everything neat and according to spec, just the way he liked it. But
all that changed on his assignment to the Cay Habitat. Could you
just stand there and allow the exploitation of hundreds of helpless
children merely to enhance the bottom line of a heartless
mega-corporation? Leo Graf adopted 1000 quaddies--now all he had to do was teach
them to be free.
The Warrior's Apprentice
Miles Vorkosigan uses wit and real nerve to lead a
fast growing mercenary force. He manages to become a real hero,
barely winning with smarts alone. At the end of the conflict, he heads a
fleet of 19 ships and 3,000 troops. The only problem is, it is treason--as
in, a hanging offense--to command a private army. Forget Captain Kirk!
Miles doesn't get the girl (but he tries!) and is fun and crafty without
being swarmy. A terrific book!
Brothers in Arms
Miles Vorkosigan, the hero, has one role -- heir to the throne and seat on
the council. He has another role, a secret alter ego -- Admiral Naismith.
And now he discovers he has a brother -- a clone named Mark who is plotting to
replace -- one of him? The turns and twists about questions of identity,
what it means to have a family, to be related, make this a deep and
fascinating story.
1990 Hugo, Best Novel
The Vor Game
A fun book about what happens when a prince and a mercenary team up and get
into a lot of trouble. The story opens with Miles shaking up the High
command on his home world, Barrayar. As punishment, he's sent away to
the other side of the galaxy, where he runs into his old pals, the Free
Dendarii Mercenaries. This turns out to be a good meeting. Because
Miles' childhood chum, Emperor Gregor, has disappeared. Saving Gregor is
really important to Miles; because if Gregor dies, the next person in line
for the throne is Miles himself!
1991 Hugo, Best Novel:
Barrayar
Looking for a great female hero? Cordelia Naismith is your woman!
A legendary commander in the Betan Expeditionary Force, Cordelia married the
commander of the forces she defeated in battle. Unfortunately, Cordelia
didn't pay attention to how important a Vor lord she married. When the
Emperor dies, her husband assumes the Regency. Now it's the two of them
against a planet bent on civil war. This book is all about Miles Vorkosigan's
parents in the period just before Miles' birth. Once you pick it up, you
won't be able to put it down!
The Spirit Ring
The daughter of a legendary creator of enchanted art objects, Fiametta wanted
desperately to use the magic inside her, but her father would have
none of it. But the flash of a dagger changed her destiny forever, sending
father and daughter running for their lives. The heroine is young,
inpendent and daring. Her problem: being held back by her sex and a
domineering father, is something every teengirl can relate to. She longs
for longs for love, and freedom, but Fiametta has some growing to do in
this story. Recommended for middle and teen girls.
Ceteganda
Miles suffers the company of his Cousin Ivan. Together, they travel to
Cetaganda, a world with which Barrayar has just ended a war. The
Empress of Cetaganda has died, naturally. But her lifelong attendant
just died quite unnaturally, and Miles is being framed for her murder and
the loss of a cultural icon. Miles and Ivan are truly in the thick of a
grand adventure and a stunning mystery.
Memory
Restored to life after being pronounced dead, Miles Vorkosigan is left with a
body that doesn't work right, the kiss of death for a military man or a field
agent. The roller coaster begins to roll when Miles is faced with the choice
of his life -- fess up to his illness and end his military career, or lie.
His choices, the consequences and the path his life takes are a fascinating
ride. Her best book yet!
