Rachel: Why did you choose a career in the fashion and costuming industry over any other kind of career?
Robin: Costuming has been my hobby since I was about four years old. It chose me. For years I did costuming as a hobby long before it was ever my profession. Managing and being the curator of such an incredible collection as this one is, in a sense, a hard profession to get into because there are not a lot of curator positions open.
You have to wait for the right position to come along and, in the meantime, work wherever else you end up working. In my case I did a lot of theater work.
Rachel: What kind of work did you do in the theatre?
Robin: I've worked in costume construction. Those are the people who actually build the clothes that the designer designs. I've also worked as a runner, a dresser and a costume designer. So I think I've gone through all the jobs that involve costumes in a theatre. The entire time I was doing that, I was also holding down a full time job in a field completely unrelated to costuming. That was as an Office Services Manager, which is basically secretarial.
Rachel: So, while you were working as a Office Services Manger, you always kept that dream in mind?
Robin: Right. I knew I wanted a permanent position in the industry. I didn't know that my job as curator would involve all of my skills and background and that it would take every experience I had including some of the experiences I had as an Office Services professional. So, everything I've done in the past helped out in this career. Every part of almost every job I've had helps out in some sense.
Rachel: Being the curator of a costume and fashion collection sounds really exciting. How did you find out about this job?
Robin: Through an accident. My mother saw the executive director of the library and museum speaking at a library conference. I had known about the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandizing for years. I did not know that they had as extensive a collection as they have. And I've been pushing to make sure everybody else knows that they have it now that I'm here.
