Meet Robin Pavlosky
Fashion Museum Curator
Getting Ready

Rachel: How did you get ready for a career in fashion and costuming?

Robin: Lots and lots of school. I have a Bachelor's Degree in theater in both acting and costume design. I also have a Minor in English Literature. I have a post graduate degree in Design and Merchandising and Museum Studies. I've also spent about 20 years doing historical reenactment and recreation.

Rachel: Historical reenactment? Do you mean like the Renaissance Pleasure Fair?

Robin: That's right. Pleasure Fair and any other historical costume group that happens to come along. I've done a lot of different eras of costuming, the most popular of which are the Renaissance, the Victorian and the Medieval.

Rachel: To make and design costumes, what kind of classes would you recommend girls take in school?

Robin: Well besides history, art and drawing classes, you need very particular math skills to do patterning and drafting. You need a lot of math and geometry. You need to be good at dealing with fractions. When you are learning patterning and pattern making, fractions are a big part of it. You have to be able to do the math quickly, in your head, be able to figure out how many pieces you need to go around this costume to make a circle. You need to figure out how big each piece needs to be in order to make up a specific size.

Rachel: Wow. I never thought about needing math to do fashion design.

Robin: Well, it's true. Besides knowing fabrics and history, and fashion and clothes and being able to construct and sew, you need math too. I was very good at fractions and geometry as a kid. And, lo and behold, I have a job that requires a lot of geometry. It's fun though. To take an idea and see it turn into a design that you made is really great.
