This inauguration gown was made at FIDM by students at the school. Wow! Want to jumpstart your career in the fashion industry? Knowledge is power! So, here's a listing of some of the magazines and trade newspapers that Robin recommends you check out if you're really seriously interested in sewing and costuming. You can find them at libraries and news stands.

You can also get information about a career in fashion design and costume at the FIDM (Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandizing) site. There's an online gallery, gallery archives with lots of interviews with costume and fashion designers, like Ha Nguyen, the woman who designed "Mortal Kombat" the movie. There's a calendar of fashion events the world over. And their links page is abso-toot-ly primo.

• The Hollywood costume collection is owned by the Recreation and Parks Department of Los Angeles.

• There's also the Cameo Collection. This group of pieces is on a 25 year loan to the school. It was commissioned by Merle Norman cosmetics several years ago. Some of the top designers were asked to design, make and build historically inspired gowns.

• a collection of ethnic clothing

• collections by European designers, American designers, and California designers

• historical garments organized by decades

• collections of children's clothing, men's wear, etc.

FIDM also has a museum display area that student groups can view by appointment. The museum has bits and pieces from each area of the costume collection.
