Rachel: So, what's in the FIDM museum and library?
Robin: We have a collection of costumes, ethnic apparel and historical garments that range from the 18th century to the present. There's couture and ready-to-wear creations from leading designers the world over. It's just a fabulous collection. Students, professionals and researchers have an opportunity to compare design styles and construction techniques on all kinds of clothing and textiles. We collect men's, women's and children's dress and accessories. And we have samples of laces, embroideries and fabrics from all over the world.
Rachel: I saw a lot of books in the library.
Robin: That's right. It's a fabulous collection. We have rare books, periodicals, fashion plates, illustrations, you name it. It's here. But there's more resources here than just books. There's photographs, a fashion video library, we have a web site, WWW.FIDM.COM, an extremely knowledgeable staff and a terrific gallery.
Rachel: I want to hear about the gallery!
Robin: One of our recent exhibits was called "Paris Couture" and it was an exhibit of approximately 70 gowns and dresses from Paris fashion designers past and present. Some of the designers we featured were Christian Dior, Yves St. Laurent, Christian La Croix, Jean Paul Gautier, Givenchi, are some of them. We also had a special group of pieces from Lesage, the embroidery and beading master in Paris. He sent a number of pieces from his salon in Paris.
Right now, we're having our 5th Academy Costume Awards Exhibit. There's costumes on display from "The Crucible", "Emma", "Evita", "101 Dalmations" and a whole lot more.
