Meet Robin Pavlosky
Fashion Museum Curator
My Day on the Job

Rachel :Robin, what's a day like on your job? What does a Curator do?

Robin : A good portion of my day is spent helping students with projects or with finding materials in the textile division. The textile division is a resource room for textile and costume and fashion students. They can come in here and take swatches or color cards or color samples. They can also look at files that have information about costumes.

The problem is, costume books are pretty much out of date as soon as they come out. So the files are a way to get more current information on any aspect of the costume and fashion industry. We clip articles from newspapers around the country and also from magazines to keep those up files to date.

I also spend parts of my day doing the cataloguing of costumes in the collection. I take people on tours through the collection too. So, a lot of my job is Public Relations. When a group of people or a prospective new student comes in and wants to see the costume collections, then I show them through the costume departments.

Another part of my day might consist of doing a lecture to a visiting group, such as a junior high, high school or college group. Often they come in, tour the school and then finish up with a presentation of the costume collection. Any one or more of these things can happen on any day.

I also have regular library duties. I shelve books and read the shelves to make sure everything's in place. I also work on quarterly or monthly statistical reports. And another part of my job is to maintain all the costumes in the costume collection.

Rachel : What do you do when you "maintain" a collection? What's that all about?

Robin: Well, whenever a costume is going out on loan or being used for an exhibit, I make sure that it is in perfect condition to do that. I repair anything that's wrong with it. And I make sure that there's nothing wrong with it when it comes back. I check to see that the costume is still in the same condition as when it left.

Rachel: Are you also involved with the Fashion Institute's web site?

Robin: Yes, I am. I answer any of the questions on the web site that involve costuming or fashion. I find the answers, write them up, and then they are sent to the person that asked the question.

Rachel: So, who's the coolest person you've met on your job?

Robin: The coolest person recently, was James Acheson, the Academy Award winning designer for "Restoration." He was a very kind gentleman who lectured here. He also toured the costume department. So I got a chance to show him through my toys. That was a lot of fun.
