About the Game:
GIRLS HELP CREATE "SPAY NOW", A NEW WEB GAME THAT ENCOURAGES SPAYING PETS
(Oceanside, CA February 19, 2001)

Inspired by the plight of homeless pets, two girls, Brigid Cleary, 11 and Angela Ortiz,14, of A Girl's World Online Clubhouse http://www.agirlsworld.com/ in collaboration with the North County Humane Society helped create "Spay Now", a web-based game that is both fun and educational because it encourages users to spay/neuter their pets. Issuing their challenge to the kids of the world, Brigid and Angela invite web gamers to try their hand at clicking on a host of cute, scampering pets to spay them before the player runs out of enough money to feed them. Thanks to grants from PETsMART Charities, Inc. and the Samuel I. and John Henry Fox Foundation, web users can catch the excitement free of charge at (www.nchumane.org) as "Spay Now" launches on February 26 as part of National Spay Day.

"Spay Now's" innovative software design features a java game engine by Stephen Saunders who is responsible for the many interactive features of A Girl's World. There's a Hall of Fame for gamers with lightning fast reflexes, and a "start new game" feature to jump levels for the younger user. With graphic design and art direction by William Vallely, a noted children's book illustrator who has worked extensively in the animation field, "Spay Now's" web animation is both engaging and appealing to kids of all ages.

Agirlsworld.com is the collaborative effort over 90 volunteer editors--all girls-and was launched in 1996 to inspire, educate and promote girls' independence. Agirlsworld.com receives over 230,000 visitors each month, and was recently featured in USA TODAY and the NEW YORK TIMES. Their next project is the publication of three advice books written and edited by girls: "Talking About Boys, Friendship and Growing Up." For more information on this project, go to the A Girl's World site.

The North County Humane Society and SPCA is also proud to be in the forefront of educational technology. Their next project, a Pet-Care-A-Van, will hit the streets this summer. Guided by a belief that humankind has a responsibility to respect other forms of life, the mission of the nonprofit North County Humane Society is to protect animals from neglect, abuse, and exploitation, to advocate for their interest and welfare, and to inspire awareness and compassion for all living creatures.
