My
Friend's Parents Are Divorcing; What Can I Do to Help Her?
Hello:
I want to ask you how can I make my friend feel better. Her parents
are getting a divorce. I know it's normal for her to feel sad, but
it has been too long, and I'm worried. What can I do?
- Stephanie, 12, Puerto Rico
"Hey, Stephanie!" As sad as this is to tell you, most kids never get over a divorce. It may seem like it's a pretty long time, but just imagine your whole world being turned up side down and having to get used to a new way of living! The best thing you can do for your friend is to be there for her. Do little cute things for her to cheer her up, like packing an extra cookie in your lunch for her! It will really mean a lot to your friend if you stay your same, bubbly self, so she won't have to feel like she's dealing with another thing when she sees you. Make sure she knows that if she ever wants to talk about things bothering her that you're there to listen. With a little Tender Loving Friend Care, you'll make a big difference in the way she feels!! (Editor's Note: She could also try reading the article at: http://kidshealth.org/kid/feeling/home_family/divorce.html. It's a good look at what the kids in a divorced family can expect and do.)
