There is this girl in my class and I want her to be my friend but she is really mean. She hits people on purpose when they run into her by accident. I think that she does it just for attention. And I don't know what to do about it. Should I tell her or should I keep it to myself? - Lilly, 12, Oregon

"Hey, Lilly!" First, you need to think about why you want to be her friend. Is it because she is popular? Is she rich? Those are not good reasons to be a person's friend. However, if you want to be her friend because you think that she is a good person under the mean cover-up,then that is a good reason to want to be her friend.

Why don't you try saying something like: " Listen, when you hit people it really makes them feel bad and makes them not want to be your friend. You really hurt people's feelings when you do that so please stop." If she is really a decent person, she will listen. Then you can try inviting her to your house and getting to know her better to see if you really want to be her friend. If she doesn't listen, please set you sights on a friend who will treat people kinder. Good Luck Lilly!!!
