What
Should I Do About My Lying Friend?
My best
friend keeps lying - like saying she has a laptop, or she has a
job, or that she's a dancer and the best one at our school (and
no, she's not a dancer at all). I'm tired of her lying, but now
some of my other friends have started to think she's really cool
and are copying her! What should I do to make them stop? I hate
it when people lie!
- Kate, 10, California
"Hey, Kate!" We all experience, sometime in our life, a friend that makes up things about themselves. Then, you start to feel like they're not your friend anymore because they lie, but no one else knows but you. Here's my advice: Tell your friend to stop lying about things. Do not tell her this in front of her other friends, because she might become embarrassed if everyone else found out the wrong way. Tell her that if and when her friends come over and ask, " Can I see your laptop?" or something like that, she won't have the laptop to show them. She won't be able to show them a dance she learned in dance class if her friends ask because she doesn't know how to dance. Kindly tell her this, though. Do not yell. Tell her to stop lying and that she should go to the people she lied to, and tell them that she made all that stuff up. She probably lied because she was self-conscious and didn't want people to think she is "un-cool." So, just to make sure no one will make fun of her, she probably thinks she should make up stuff that she is positive that people will be amazed at. I hope that advice helps!
