My Friend Has Had It Really Bad!

My best friend has been going through a lot lately. Just recently her mom passed away from cancer and just before that her Grandma died. Now she has been really upset. She lives with her dad and he has a new girlfriend who treats her badly. I've been over there and it's really bad. She gets sworn at a lot and made fun of. Her dad's girlfriend calls her fat, ugly, and many other mean names, too. I am really worried about her - I think she might be thinking about doing something horrible to herself. How can I help her? - Whitney, 13, New York

"Hey, Whitney!" First of all, you can be a friend to her. Give her the love she has been missing out on and let her know that you are there for her. Talk to her often about how she's doing and how you can help. Then you think. How can I help her?

1. You can be a friend and give her love.

2. Talk to her often to make sure you don't get shut out from her life.

3. Do something about the situation. Talk to her about her situation and let her know that there are ways to prevent future disasters by calling the National Child Abuse Hotline at 1-800-4-A-Child. The hotline goes on 24 hrs a day and can be a great way to help your friend.

Even if she says she can handle it, try to convice her that in the future, it can get more uglier, so it's better to stop it now then let it get worse.

Good luck!
