Sometimes my parents and I get really mad at each other. Sometimes so much that I want to run away. Before, I have even packed my bags with clothes and money, and planned to run away that night. I can't talk to them, because they will just call me stupid for doing that. What should I do? - Kendall, 11, Canada "Hey,
Kendall"
I know it hurts so
much when even your parents can't understand you. It is true that some
parents are harder to live with than the others. You must understand
that, when someone is angry, most of the time he or she is not angry
with you. He or she may not mean to say things they say when he or she
is angry. He/She usually cannot control his/her emotion and thus just
say or do anything that satisfies him or her. Your parents might be
mad at somebody, and the anger is kept inside, just waiting for the
time to explode. And right when you've made a mistake that is actually
not all that big, they start pouring out their feelings, in a way that
is "killing" you. So, when you want to talk to your parents,
try talking to them when they're feeling more rational. You can even
write a letter telling them what you feel when they do all that to you.
But do not be mean, because that will just drive them crazy. One important
thing to remember when dealing with angry parents is not to lose your
cool. Do relaxing things, like taking a walk around the neighborhood,
or anything you like, to help you forget about your anger or disappointment
for a while. Raja, 13, Malaysia
