They're My Cousins...

My aunt got married in November so we are related to these two little girls, Alexandra and Stephanie. I really like them, but my mom doesn't want me to hang out with them. My sister also said not to. Alex and Stephanie are our cousins by marriage, so, why can't I hang out them?

"Hey, Jamie!" My suggestion would be to talk to your mom. She probably has a reason for not wanting you to see your new cousins, and you deserve to know what that reason is. Be forward and direct and calmly request her side of the story. There are many possible reasons for your family's hesitancy when it comes to you having contact with your cousins. There may be a greater issue here that your family is simply not discussing with you. However, you need to be informed of whatever issue is keeping you from developing a relationship with your two cousins.

If, after listening to your mom's point of view, you feel that her reason is NOT legitimate, express your feelings and ask for a compromise. It may very well be a simple problem that could easily be worked out. So go for it! Approach your mother and ask her to clue you in. There's nothing to lose and a greater understanding to be gained.
