We've Moved Out of the Country And I Don't Want to Be Here! I just moved back to Korea after living in California for two years. The problem is I just can't seem to adjust to the lifestyle here, partly because I'm shy. I'm going through really hard times right now so I'm seriously considering going back to the U.S, but I just can't talk to my parents about that because I'm afraid they would say something negative. What should I do? - Jen, 13, Korea "Hey, Jen!" Greetings! My mom lived in Korea for about two years of her life - she isn't an especially outgoing person, and her family moved often, so I asked her for a bit of help on this one (since I am very gregarious and have only moved twice). She basically told me that in each move, at first, it was very hard to make friends since people already had friends. In order to meet people who would share her interests; she went to clubs and joined groups that interested her. Even if she didn't decide to stay with the activity, she usually met some great teens along the way! While you are shy and jumping into something probably isn't your nature, when you meet more people in Korea, you'll discover that while their traditions are different, at the heart of it all, people are people, and girls are girls - just like you! If you really feel that you can't stay in Korea and it's leading to depression or instability, you MUST talk to your parents or a trusted adult about making some arrangements. I often fear that my parents won't like what I have to say, but that happens in life - you won't always see eye-to-eye with everyone. Try talking to your parents calmly when you aren't feeling overly emotional. This will help a lot. Hope this is in some way resolved. Happy trails!
