Our family holidays are really crazy. My Aunt is a Catholic. My sister's husband is a Buddist, my mom believes in The Goddess and my big brother doesn't believe in God at all. My boyfriend is a Methodist. During holidays there is always some argument on beliefs. Any suggestions on how to get together and steer the conversation to other things? - Bonnie, 14, Tennessee "Hey, Bonnie!" This sounds really tough. The holidays are about celebrating Christmas (Jesus' birth), Hannukah (the festival of lights), Kwanzaa (being together with your family and peace), and whatever else someone may believe so religion plays a very strong role in the holidays and probably always will. Perhaps though next time there is an argument you can jump in and say "Can we please talk about something else! Let's have fun instead of arguing. We don't have to fight about who believes what. Let's all just believe in what we want and respect each other." This may come to a shock for your family for you to say something like this. They probably don't know it bothers you. Also, bring out a game next time you are all together and ask if anyone wants to play. Maybe everyone is doing this because they have nothing better to do. Or, instead of waiting for the next arugment you can talk to everyone and just come out and say it next time you are together. Just say whatever is on your mind and how you feel. Also, say you are sick of the holidays always being ruined because of religion. You can also state that you understand religion is important during the holidays. That will sound mature and like you know what you are talking about. I hope this helps. Good luck!
