Dear Family Faire


My Dad Is So Critical!

My dad can be so weird sometimes. One second he's acts as if I'm a great daughter and he'll tell all of his friends how great I am, and the next thing I know he's getting mad at me for the littlest things! I know he picks on me and he says how immature I am all the time. But I think I'm mature and teachers at school always say that I am! I think my dad just doesn't like me. What can I do to get closer to my dad and make him not dislike me so much? - Alissa, 11, Pennsylvania

"Hey, Alissa!" I know exactly how you feel about your dad; mine's the same way. Almost each time he calls my name, it's either to tell me to do something, or explain something I've done wrong. So I suggest you try to please him in every way possible, maybe even more than he asks for.

And if he doesn't take notice of you working so hard, tell him (in a polite way of course) how you've been doing everything possible to make him happy, but you don't understand why he's never satisfied with you. He might not have realized that he's been such a critic. Or maybe his dad did the same thing for him, and he believes in that kind of discipline. You never know.
