My Brother Is a Vandal! I know that
my brother is doing a lot of vandalism. He gets mad at someone and
the next you know their car antenna is broken off their car or their
mailbox disappears. I told my dad but he says he already talked
to him about it.What else can I do? - Ernesta, 14, Mexico "Hey, Earnesta!" I think what you need to do is have a serious talk with your mom. Try confronting her in a mature manner and just explain to her how you feel. Also, do this before she has another chance to tell you she wishes this other girl was her daughter. Make sure you let your mom know that you do try and you try your best and that's all that should matter. Remember, don't say this in a way that you are getting mad at your mom; say it in maturely. That is very important. Let your mom also know that it hurts you because I'm sure it does. You try your hardest and every one is an individual and some just get better marks than others, but at least you try. Make sure you let your mom know this and everything else how you feel. Hopefully she will understand. Good luck and I really hope I could help you!
Brooke, 13, Alabama Editor's Note: You might also talk to teachers at your school or your church and see if there's any kind of counseling your brother could get to help him learn to deal more appropriately with his anger and frustration. And if nothing else, there's this quote from: http://web.rbe.sk.ca/cyber2002/canada/clarke/vandalism/default.htm (A site in the USA.) "What is vandalism? Vandalism is the inappropriate defacement of private or public property. In the fifth century, the word vandalism originally referred to a group of people who raided countries and stole other people's belongings. Most individuals vandalize because of anger, boredom, defiance, and alliance to gangs. Schools pay billions of dollars for new equipment each year just because of vandalism. Vandalism makes up three quarters of the crimes committed in elementary schools or high schools. One out of five kids who vandalize get caught, and one out of ten adults go to jail for the same crime." (Our emphasis.)
