Getting the Perfect Tan Safely

Getting the Perfect Tan Safely

Summer is right around the corner, and nothing says summer like a glowing, radiant suntan. Getting a tan is easily one of the most marvelous things about summer! We all know by now that the sun’s powerful rays can be damaging to us – anti-aging, cancer-causing – but there are ways to minimize our risks and still achieve that healthy glow. So, here’s a few ways we can enjoy our time laying out, playing, relaxing, and working on that bronze.

1 – Moisturize, Moisturize!

If your skin is hydrated and moisturized, it is much more likely to tan than if it’s dry. Make sure you’re exfoliating off that dead winter skin and then applying lotion after each bath or shower every day as part of your routine. You want to opt for a lighter cream or oil in the summertime, don’t skip this step! Adding a nourishing carrier oil to your moisturizer boosts its benefits further.  Bonus moisturizing points if you make sure to drink your eight glasses of water a day to keep your skin even more hydrated. It is your body’s largest organ, after all!

2 – Keep It Natural

Like anything else you are putting on or in your body, the more natural, the better! Suntan lotions are no exception! Make sure you’re looking for products with natural oils that hydrate and moisturize your skin. Some ingredients you’ll want in your suntan lotion are – jojoba oil, avocado oil, coconut oil. Plant, flower, fruit, and vegetable extracts are all great to have in there too. You want to find products that are paraben and silicone-free.

3 – Use a Natural Tan Accelerator

There are many tanning accelerators on the market, but you can make your own easily with much safer ingredients. All you need is olive oil, iodine, and carrot juice. Carrot seed has a myriad of benefits on top of helping you tan faster. On top of helping heal dry and cracked skin, it’s an excellent moisturizer rich in vitamins, reduces wrinkles, and rejuvenates the skin. But most importantly, but the main active ingredient in carrot seed oil is an essential building block of melanin. So, you’ll tan much faster incorporating it into your accelerator. It’s also rich in SPF, so you’ll be protected from UV rays more than without it.

4 – Switch it Up!

Sure, we all love lounging by the pool, reading a great book, or falling asleep on our towels beachside, but you want to make sure you’re switching positions pretty regularly when you’re working on your tan. Switching it up will also prevent you from burning.

5 – Quality Over Quantity, Girl!

You want to limit your UV exposure to the amount of time your body will produce melanin. After that, it’s just a recipe to burn. The amount of time is typically two to three hours; after that, your skin will not get darker that day. And if you tan past that amount of time, you’re just setting your skin up for the damaging effects of the sun’s powerful UV rays.

6 – Watch the Clock

Did you know the sun is most potent during a specific time of the day? It is! You’re going to get the most bang for your tanning bucks during the hours of noon and 3:00 pm. It is important to note that while it’s the strongest and you’re going to get tanner during this time, you’re also exposing yourself to its most powerful rays, so you are at an increased risk for skin cancer by doing so. If you happen to be fair-skinned, it would be better to tan in the morning or after 3:00 pm.

7 – Be a Smooth Operator

We all should be exfoliating that winter skin off our bodies as we head into summer anyway, but this is especially important if you’re working on being a bronze goddess. So, choose a body exfoliant and to work. You want to focus on dry areas like your elbows and heels but exfoliating your whole body is essential. You want to exfoliate at least two to three days a week to achieve peak softness.

So there you have it! Now go out there and get glowing!
