AGW'S HOLLYWOOD REVIEW CREW PRESENTS

picture
Lynn.b, of California, one of our "Hollywood Preview Crew", got to screen a new film that opens soon. Here's what Lynn thought of NUTTY PROFESSOR II THE KLUMPS

In NUTTY PROFESSOR II THE KLUMPS, Eddie Murphy is back as a whole family: Professor Sherman, Granny, Mama, Papa, Ernie and he also plays Sherman's alter-ego Buddy Love! At the end of the last movie, Sherman thought he'd seen the last of rude, crude Buddy but he was just buried in Sherman's subconscious. Buddy comes back and threatens Sherman's marriage plans to colleague Denise Gaines (Janet Jackson). Using, Denise's DNA research, Sherman tries to extract Buddy's genes from his system but it backfires and brings Buddy into the world as a separate person who is determined to steal Sherman's new fountain of youth serum!

Sherman hides the serum at home but Papa Klump uses it and becomes young and feisty only to revert back to his elderly, cantankerous self. Buddy steals the formula and without Buddy's genes in his system, Sherman's brilliant mind starts deteriorating. The only answer is to be rejoined with Buddy and control him once and for all. The rest of the film is a race against time to retrieve the formula, restore Sherman's "smarts" and make sure Sherman and Denise get married.

To me, the best thing about this film is Eddie Murphy's incredible ability to "be" all of the Klump family. Each one has a distinct personality and "look" (thanks to make-up artist Rick Baker). Murphy does a fantastic job making us believe each member of this family is a real person. There are plenty of laughs in the movie (Lookout! Some are kinda crude but hey, crude can be funny). All the Klumps are overweight so there are jokes coming from that fact. However, there are also several really sweet, warm moments, especially between Sherman and Denise, that show us that she loves him for his personality and what she has in common with him, and couldn't care less about his weight. Wrapping up, although there are some "Something About Mary"-style crude jokes in this film, it's got a really Klump-sized heart!

NUTTY PROFESSOR II THE KLUMPS opens July 28th
This movie is rated "PG-13"
