Lynn b. of our Hollywood Preview crew, went to a screening of a new comedy film. Here's the scoop on:

LEGALLY BLONDE

Talented and naturally blonde Reese Witherspoon was the ideal choice to play Legally Blonde's breezy heroine Elle Woods. Reese loved that "Elle proves with her own special spirit that anyone can overcome their fears and succeed on their own terms. Some people might make it because they know about Plato and Socrates and others succeed because they know about Porsches and Clinique. The point is to use what you have and believe in yourself." In this appealing, feel-good comedy, pretty women with brains rule and judgmental snobs drool.

Pretty in pink, blonde college sorority girl Elle Woods (Reese Witherspoon) is a super-popular honor student (majoring in Fashion Merchandising). She's certain that preppy boyfriend Warner (Matthew Davis) will propose but he breaks her heart by announcing that he's off to Harvard Law School and she's too blonde and not serious enough to aid his planned political career. He needs "Jackie" and she's too "Marilyn". Determined to get her man back, Elle applies to Harvard Law, studies hard, hires "a Coppola" to direct her admissions video and is accepted.

California girl Elle is too "fluffy" to fit in with East Coast snobs and has to continually prove herself to fellow students and teachers. When she learns that Warner is engaged to Vivian (Selma Blair) a Jackie Kennedy clone who thinks she's pink dirt, Elle is even more determined to prove herself. Along with Warner and Vivian, Elle is chosen for a coveted intern spot at law Professor Callahan (Victor Garber's) law film where she assists with the defense at a sensational murder trial. Several obstacles almost force Elle to give up and go back home but, one by one, she wins over her peers, puts her boss in his place and ends up successfully defending the client alone. As for Warner, she's outgrown him.

Legally Blonde is a totally enchanting, witty and well-acted film that carries a great message for blondes, brunettes, gals and guys alike; be yourself, stick to your guns and don't let anyone label you something you're not. Yes, it's a formula story but sharp and savvy dialogue (script by Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten Smith) and fine performances by a good ensemble cast make this life-affirming movie a delight to watch. The soundtrack (with jaunty lead song performed by Hoku) is upbeat and lively and as Elle proves she's more than curls and curves, the character grows on us until we back her 100 percent. Reese Witherspoon researched the role at sorority houses, spas and law schools and it shows. She's completely convincing as the sorority dove turned legal eagle.

This isn't a guy-bashing film. Elle is kind to all, including a sweet but nerdy male classmate whom she helps get a date. Self-serving "bad guy" Warner is nicely balanced by sweet and hunky, supportive lawyer Emmett who wins Elle's heart. And, yes, Bruiser the Chihuahua is a dead ringer for the Taco Bell dog and rates a 10 on the cute pooch scale. Take your gal or guy pals or significant other and enjoy this summer comedy featuring a lovable heroine with both hair and heart of gold.
