AGW Entertainment reporter Lynn B. saw a new comedy film: LEGALLY BLONDE 2: RED WHITE AND BLONDE MGM Pictures
In Boston, lawyer Elle Woods (Reese Witherspoon) plans to marry her Harvard law professor guy, Emmett (Luke Wilson) and has a big, pink J.Lo engagement ring to prove it. In typical Elle fashion, she hires a private investigator to find her dog Bruiser's biological parents so she can invite them to the wedding! Finding Bruiser's mom cues Elle in to the horrors of animal testing, especially for the cosmetics that Elle so loves. This prompts impulsive Elle to take a job in Washington as a legislative assistant in order to get a bill passed that would make animal testing illegal (I'm for that!). Elle is hindered and/or helped by some interesting politicians and old pals. Former Delta Nu sorority sister and current State Representative Victoria Rudd (Sally Field) takes her on as an assistant but she is helped most by her hotel's politically savvy doorman (Bob Newhart). Elle's "Bruiser's Bill" is blocked by Grace (Regina King), a senior level congressional aide who has fought the political red tape for too long and has little patience for a perky, pink upstart. Airhead old pal Paulette (Jennifer Coolidge) storms Washington to help and, finally, with her own brand of politics and a call out to her sorority sisters, Elle and Bruiser triumph. In the first "Blonde" we watched Elle surprise herself when she succeeded as a lawyer. Now, we know she's smart under that pink pillbox hat but we do have fun watching her triumph by doing Washington the "Elle" way. Supporting characters all serve their purposes but are barely developed. Luke Wilson, poor guy, really phones in his performance (literally) with little cameos of himself and Elle on the long distance phone lines. The hilarious Jennifer Coolidge stands out as Elle's truly clueless pal, however. The cause pink-clad Elle selects (animal rights) is just and there is something really gratifying about seeing a fluffy woman with a heart of gold succeed among the snotty, cheating Washington bureaucrats she takes on .especially on 4th of July week! The film carries the message that it should never be "their way or the highway". We all have something to contribute no matter how we choose to accomplish our goals. However, his paper-thin film would go nowhere fast without Reese Witherspoon as the overly-perky Elle. When this charmer stands up for people and pooches against the self-centered Washington Elite, we root for her bigtime .again. Rated: PG-13 |
