AGW Entertainment reporter Lynn B. saw a new action/comedy film LOONEY TUNES: BACK IN ACTION Warner Brothers Pictures
In Looney Tunes: Back in Action, we're at Warner Brothers studios where D.J. Drake (Brendan Fraser) is a wannabe stuntman and comedy executive Kate Houghton (Jenna Elfman) tells bosses that longtime star Daffy Duck should be dumped. Daffy's sidekick/rival Bugs Bunny isn't that upset at first. D.J. can't get a stunt job even though his dad Damien Drake (Timothy Dalton) is the studio's biggest star. D.J. is assigned to "escort" Daffy off the lot but the duck becomes D.J.'s self-appointed sidekick and they learn that D.J.'s dad, actually a secret agent, has been kidnapped by the Acme Corporation's Mr. Chairman (Steve Martin). Duck and DJ. hit the road to Las Vegas in a desperate attempt to save dad. Meanwhile, Bugs and Kate are hot on their tail in an effort to get Daffy back, because, the studio has realized that Bugs can't make it without his comic buddy. In Vegas, D.J. gets in the middle of a good old-fashioned barroom brawl, courtesy of Yosemite Sam, and the wacky action gets wackier from there. Kate, D.J., Daffy and Bugs team up on a chase to find The Blue Monkey (a big diamond) and track down dad. The chase goes through the Louvre in Paris, Area 52.. a sci-fi lab headed by Mother (Joan Cusack), a Lara Croft-style Raiders of the Lost Ark temple in Africa and even outer space all while Mr. Chairman keeps tabs on them and continues torturing D.J.'s dad. Finally.. the good guys and toons win! I love this movie! There is something to roll in the sticky theater aisle laughing about every few seconds. I haven't laughed so hard in ages! There are "adult" references to old movies (Psycho, Lethal Weapon, etc, etc.) an hilarious joke about product placement involving Walmart, every classic 50's sci-fi movie monster you've ever seen, Scooby Doo gives Matthew Lillard a hard time in the studio commissary and Daffy drives the Batmobile! What else do you need? But, the fun just goes on! Brendan Fraser plays his own stuntman and makes fun of himself with great glee. Former James Bond Timothy Dalton is great as.. a Bondish spy and Steve Martin is over-the-top but often hilarious as a ditzy mad ruler type who wears a wacky red wig and pants that are five inches too short. Okay, there are a few jokes that fall flat (I wasn't laughing as much in the Yosemite Sam Las Vegas casino scenes) but everything moves quickly and there is something here for all ages! There is a brilliant sequence involving toons blending into various famous paintings and adapting the painting's style that is visually brilliant! The CGI work, special effects and all tech credits make the blending of live action actors and cartoon characters seamless. Take
everybody you know of any age and take in this toon-fully fun laugh-fest! Rated: PG |
