PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL

Walt Disney Pictures

Johnny Depp was so into his role as pirate Captain Jack Sparrow that he lived on a boat all during production in the Caribbean and fellow actors Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom had to paddle out to party with Johnny in kayaks. From what we gathered by talking to the three actors; playing pirates is just yo ho hilarious fun!

For Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, we need some backstory to set the scene. Long John Silver-style Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) was fellow pirate Captain Jack Sparrow's (Johnny Depp) first mate but he led a mutiny and took Sparrow's ship, the Black Pearl, and its treasure, leaving Sparrow to die on a tiny island. Sparrow mysteriously survives and, as the movie opens, sails into Port Royal harbor in one of the funniest scenes in the movie!

What Sparrow finds out is that the Pearl's Aztec treasure carries a curse that dooms his former crew to sail the seas as the undead. Only moonlight reveals them as living skeletons.

The spooky-looking Black Pearl sails into Port Royal harbor, just after Sparrow arrives, to get back a big gold coin which is the last piece of the pirated treasure. If the treasure is completely restored along with the payment of a "blood debt," the curse will lift. The "Pearl's" crew also kidnaps the coin's owner, Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley), daughter of the governor (Jonathan Pryce). Giving chase are two men who are crazy about Elizabeth; Will Turner (Orlando Bloom), a blacksmith and childhood friend secretly in love with her, and snotty British Commodore Norrington (Jack Davenport), who has asked her to marry him. Jack Sparrow just wants his darn boat back!!

Despite the fact that he really hates pirates, Will joins forces with Sparrow. The unlikely duo hijacks the fastest ship in the British fleet and sets sail for the Isla de Muerta, where Sparrow is sure Captain Barbossa hopes to break the curse.

Avast me hearties! From the first scene to the last, this film totally rocks! It's everything you expect in a pirate movie; ship battles, swordplay, damsels in distress (although this one kicks it in action with the guys!), a cursed pirate treasure and even a themesong. Various times in the movie somebody sings the "Yo, Ho, a Pirates Life for Me" song from the Disney ride!

There are other cute tributes to the ride including a jail scene complete with doggie who holds the keys, pirates sitting on a pile of barrels that are about to collapse, etc. But, if you've never been to Disneyland or DisneyWorld, fear not, this movie will keep you totally engrossed. The costumes, sets and CGI spooky cursed pirate action created by ILM will keep those eyes-a-poppin' and the talented cast creates unforgettable characters.

Adding to the adventure, the movie is hilarious in many scenes; much of the humor can be attributed to Johnny Depp's portrayal. Depp, again proves that he has no equal when it comes to totally creating unique characters. His Capt. Jack manages to be both extremely weird and very attractive! Hot Orlando Bloom is perfect (and perfect-looking) as the good guy who has to learn to be a little lawless in order to rescue his lady love. Keira Knightley is extremely feminine but athletic enough to ditch the corset and fluffy dresses, grab a pair of pants and rescue some guys with gusto! Geoffrey Rush is deliciously over-the-top as he should be as the evil cursed captain Barbossa and Jonathan Pryce is totally convincing as the prissy dad of a kidnapped daughter. All the supporting players provide wonderful little comic moments throughout. The music is epic and totally appropriate in all scenes.

I have absolutely no complaints with this wonderful film. Next, Disney is adapting their Haunted Mansion ride into a film. I can't wait! Just….pleeeeeze don't make a movie out of the It's a Small World ride!

Rated: PG-13
