AGW'S HOLLYWOOD REVIEW CREW PRESENTS

The Perfect Storm
Lesha, 16, of California, one of our "Hollywood Preview Crew", got to screen a new film that opens soon. Here are Lesha's thoughts on THE PERFECT STORM

THE PERFECT STORM, based on a true story, is about ordinary people who work at sea, fishermen, rescue workers and even sailboat owners who faced one of the most powerful storms at sea ever! In October, 1991 in the North Atlantic, (where the Titanic went down) a fishing boat captained by Billy Tyne (George Clooney) and his crew, went back to sea because they hadn't caught enough fish that season. Bobby Shatford (Mark Wahlberg) is the "rookie" on the boat and wants to make money to pay off a divorce lawyer and start a new life with his girlfriend Chris (Diane Lane).

Against the wishes of girlfriends and other women in their lives, the men of the "Andrea Gail" swordfishing boat go far out to sea where the most fish can be caught. They catch a lot but must return home quickly when their ice machine (keeping the fish fresh) breaks down. A huge storm (actually three storms combined) is starting to whip up trouble but the Andrea Gail crew doesn't get the warning and starts home. Meanwhile, a sailboat has already faced the storm, capsizes and the people have to be saved in terrible seas by the brave men of a rescue helicopter crew who then have to be rescued themselves. Captain Tyne finally hears about the huge storm on his radio but decides he can beat it back home to Glouchester, Massachusetts with his huge, money-making catch of fish.

The Perfect Storm

"The Perfect Storm" paints a real picture of the fisherman's life at sea, their courage and the families these men leave behind to worry each time they go out. The special effects storm is the most awesome thing I've ever seen! Waves are tall as a skyscraper and you feel like you are right there with these seafarers as they fight for their boats and lives. The only problem I had was understanding what the characters were saying under the awful (but real) noise of the storm. The music by James Horner (who wrote the "Titanic" score) is really good. The movie is super exciting but might be kind of scary for really young kids. I really liked it!

THE PERFECT STORM opens June 30th
This movie is rated "PG-13"
