AGW'S HOLLYWOOD REVIEW CREW PRESENTS
SWEET NOVEMBER
Lynn B. of California, one of our "Hollywood Preview Crew", got to
go to a screening of a new film! Here are Lynn's thoughts on SWEET
NOVEMBER.
"In addition to the challenge of working in a different genre, what
also appealed to Keanu (Reeves) was the idea of doing a movie that had
absolutely not one blue screen, car chase or fight sequence. This role
is simply about relating to another character", says SWEET NOVEMBER
producer Erwin Stoff.
To successful, high pressure ad executive NELSON MOSS (Keanu Reeves),
time is money, everything has got a price and a private life is a luxury
he's not willing to afford. At the DMV, Nelson meets SARA DEEVER (Charlize
Theron), a Bohemian free spirit who is his total opposite. When Nelson
is responsible for Sara not getting her license renewed, she latches
onto him for rides. He's intrigued but she just doesn't fit into his
control-freak plans.
Sara makes Nelson an offer he can't refuse; he can live with her for a
month (November) and she'll change his life. Then, both will be on their
way. "You live in a box. I would lift the lid and let a little light in".
Otherwise, she'll continue to harass him. When Nelson messes up a big
pitch for a new account and gets fired, he takes her up on her offer.
During their month together, Sara makes Nelson stop and smell the roses.
She gives his fancy clothes away, won't let him wear a watch or use a
cell phone. Sara claws through his armor and finds a vulnerable guy. She
introduces him to ABNER, a sweet, fatherless neighborhood kid and her
good buddy CHAZ, who turns out not to be what he seems. Through his new
relationships, Nelson learns what really counts in life, turns down a
lucrative business offer and realizes that his only "friend" VINCE, is
just a cold jerk. When Sara and Nelson fall in love, he finally understands
why she's on her "man of the month kick" and his experience with her transforms
him totally.
SWEET NOVEMBER is a re-make of a 1968 romantic film but its DHARMA AND
GREG-style characters are very "now". Charlize and Keanu have good chemistry
(they played husband and wife in THE DEVIL'S ADVOCATE), dialogue is witty
and snappy and supporting characters are great. You might recognize GREG
GERMANN who plays Vince from his role as the shark-like Richard on "Ally
McBeal" and Sara's friend CHAZ is wonderfully played by JASON ISAACS who
does a total reversal here from his role as the bloodthirsty British Officer
who kills Mel Gibson's son in THE PATRIOT. There are elements in this
film that you've seen before but it's well-written and, judging from the
reactions of Valentine's Day couples in my screening audience, it's a
great date film with a very worthy message: turn off that cell phone and
live a little!
