AGW'S HOLLYWOOD REVIEW CREW PRESENTS
Lynn.b, of California, one of our "Hollywood Preview Crew", got to screen one
of the hottest new films of the summer! Here are Lynn's thoughts on X-MEN
What if you kissed your boyfriend for the first time and he went into a
life-threatening coma?! This is the case for teen mutant Rogue (Anna
Paquin) in the new movie X-MEN. When Rogue, who
can absorb human energy with just a touch, runs away from home and ends
up in Canada, she meets Logan who is also called Wolverine. When she
sees that he is also a mutant (genetically-advanced human with super
powers), the two team up for mutual understanding and protection.
Evil mutants: Mystique (Rebecca Romijn-Stamos), Sabre Tooth (Tyler Mane)
and Toad (Ray Park who played Darth Maul in Star Wars) are headed by
Magneto (Ian McKellen). They try to capture the duo but Dr. Xavier
(Patrick Stewart of Star Trek) and his band of good mutants: Storm
(Halle Berry), Cyclops (hottie James Marsden) and Dr. Jean Grey (Famke
Janssen) intervene and take the two to Dr. Xavier's School for Gifted
Children (a cover and training base for the good guy mutants). At the
school, Dr. Xavier offers to help Wolverine (Aussie Hugh Jackman)
remember his sad past and Rogue control her powers. One night Rogue,
who has a crush on Wolverine (who has a crush on Dr. Jean Gray, who is
going with Cyclops (it's complicated) tries to comfort Wolverine who is
having a nightmare. She accidentally hurts him and, feeling badly, runs
away only to be captured by Magneto and his evil Brotherhood of
Mutants.
Magneto plans to control the world and subjugate Mankind by turning all
the heads of state gathered at a big peace conference on Ellis Island,
into mutants themselves! Dr. Xavier wants to try for mutant tolerance
instead. Magneto sets out to use Rogue to channel all his power and zap
the visiting heads of state into mutants.. of course this will kill
Rogue! After a really wild and visual battle, the good mutants save the
day and rescue Rogue.
MUTANT POWER STATS (As they exist in the film)
GOOD GUYS:
- Dr. Charles Xavier - X-Men Mentor - Telepath
- Logan/Wolverine - healing power, retractable claws
- Storm - controls the weather
- Dr. Jean Grey - Telepathy and telekinesis
- Cyclops - Optic blast that can pierce mountains!
- Rogue - Can absorb power and energy of anyone she touches
BAD GUYS:
- Magneto - Most powerful mutant - controls metal
- Mystique - shapeshifter
- Toad- hop long distances, catch anything with his tongue
- Sabre Tooth - muscle, super strength
This film is based on a super-popular comic book and t.v. animation
series. Fans of the comic and series have great expectations for the
movie. Although there was a controversy about the film costumes not
matching the comics, I think fans should like the film because it is
true to the spirit and relationships of the original X-Men. The message
of tolerance remains key in the film: Just because you are different
doesn't mean you are bad or can't add to society. Even the lead good guy
is in a wheelchair! You even understand why bad mutant Magneto hates all
human oppressors. When a senator (Bruce Davison) wants to register and
segregate all mutants, there's a great parallel to Nazi's "registering"
then getting rid of Jews during W.W.II. The story also matches the
anticommunist era in the 1950's when Senator McCarthy wanted to register
all communists and drive them out of the country. If you are new to the
X-Men, you should like the film for great action, humor and
well-developed character relationships. In short, fan or "newbie", go
see this movie. The X-Men rock!!
X-MEN opens July 14
This movie is rated "PG-13"
