We're Hangin' With a Superstar! KIRSTEN DUNST Hot
19-year-old actress Kirsten Dunst has quite a track record for someone
her age. As a child star she was in Woody Allen's New York Stories,
played Tom Hank's daughter in Bonfire of the Vanities and the
child vampire Claudia in Interview with the Vampire. Having grown
into a full-fledged "hottie", she's made an impression in
Drop Dead Gorgeous, Dick, The Virgin Suicides and recently, Cheerleading
hit Bring It On. Siizzlin' right now, Kirsten could play any young
glam gal role she wishes. AGW: Did you star in crazy/beautiful to break out of the (more shallow) teen roles we've seen you in? K: I just wanted to do a younger person's movie that wasn't such a cheesy romance..more realistic. They let me be a mess. It was the best thing. I'd go in and out of hair and make-up in ten minutes, compared to like Spiderman where I had a wig and all this make-up on. I prefer casual, jeans and tee-shirts." AGW: Did you think crazy/beautiful was originally too racy for a PG-13 rating? K: The script was wholesome and sweet but (director) John Stockwell was ready to put more edge in it. I hope crazy/beautiful will be an intelligent film for teenagers instead of something that has no substance. Hopefully it will make people think. AGW: What was the toughest thing about making crazy/beautiful? K: It was really fighting to keep stuff in the film that people wanted to take out or soften. We even had to do some re-shoots because they wanted my character to be more redeeming but it was the role. You don't like Nicole in the beginning and that was the whole point. The most challenging was probably staying in an emotional, depressed mode all the time. It's so draining. I'd take that home with me and I noticed myself being different to my family. It was icky. AGW: You seem to be taking on more varied roles K: That's what I want to do. I want to not be pigeonholed and make sure that I diversify cuz then Spiderman's gonna come out and I'll be the girl next door, Mary Jane and I'll have to do something to contradict that. AGW: Do you have a no nudity clause in your contracts? K: Yeah. I'm always very careful about that. It was in the script but I don't do that. They knew that . I don't feel comfortable with that. I have younger people watching my films and I want to be a good role model. I don't think it's necessary. It's tasteless to me for a girl my age. They would have had to cut it out anyway to make a PG-13 rating. AGW:
How was working with Jay Hernandez? K: Jay is so professional. It's his first film and I was so surprised because he really had his stuff together. I made him feel at ease a little bit. He was nervous. When I first met him he was stand-offish and I was like, I'm just a normal girl. AGW: Were you into photography like Nicole in the film? Did you have to learn it for this role? K: I learned a lot more than I knew. I'm really into it but I got to use this little Russian camera and it takes really cool pictures. It's not that great quality so it fades the edges. I took most of the pictures that she takes in the film and it was so fun to do that. AGW: Can we talk a little about Spiderman? What about acting with Special Effects. Is it weird? K: I had done Jumanji, and Small Soldiers. It's so weird to act and react to things that aren't there. Spiderman was the hardest though because I had to do so much blue screen. They put me through more torture than Tobey (Maguire). I was doing more stunts than he was. You see my face so you can't hide me. You can have anyone behind a mask doing his stunts but I was out in the open. I had to do everything. AGW: Is there a good character relationship between you and Tobey in the film? K: Yeah, it's a good love story but it's also his journey. It's good because he's very humanistic as Spiderman. People can relate to him a lot. He's a loving character. You really feel for him. In a lot of super hero movies, you don't care about the hero ..he saves the good guys and kills the bad guys but Spiderman has so much more to him. AGW: There's so much pressure on that film to succeed. K: I don't feel any pressure. (Laughing) I'm not Spiderman! AGW: Were the stunts difficult to do? K: No, we had the best stunt guys. I was hangin' from wires but I never felt in danger. One time, I had to sit in this chair facing the camera above my head and wiggle my arms and hands and just scream at the camera. It's so ridiculous. You feel like an idiot and the crew is standing around with their donuts and cokes and everything is blue and you're supposed to be falling. AGW: You did a great job at the MTV Movie awards. (Hosting) How was that experience for you? K: So much fun. Jimmy Fallon (co-host) is such a great guy. We had so much fun like two kids at play. So laid back and cool. I was nervous to do the show at first but I started getting into it and now I'm not nervous at all to do live t.v. I did Jay Leno later and I was fine. AGW: Did you meet anybody cool there? K: I didn't meet anybody. I was up there doin' my thing. But, you know what was really cute to me, is Tom Cruise. As we were up at the podium waiting for our cues, I caught Tom's eyes and he was so sweet. Later, he was like, "You're so beautiful. You did such a really nice job." He's just such a good-hearted guy, so sweet. AGW: What are your early impressions of MTV? Any memories growing up? K:
"Bevis and Butthead" made me what I am today (laughs). They
have some funny shows on now. There's this one, "Becoming".
It's so weird. People who really want to be "Destiny's Child"
and they get all dolled up and shoot a video. So funny. AGW: Did you pretend you were a rock star growing up? K: I did. As a joke. My best friend growing up Lindsay, had long dark curly hair and so she was Slash and I was Axel Rose with a headband and we'd rock out in front of the mirror. But my brother, me and a friend all had blonde, long hair. We were at Magic Mountain and we recorded one of those tourist videos as Hanson. It was funny. I was playing piano with my foot. AGW: What's next for you? Nothing right now. I like to work non-stop. People say it isn't healthy but I've done all these things to get to this adult stage now and I'm getting all these offers. Now I'm going to take time off though and be more selective. I want to take a lot of vacations. I went to Oregon and went river rafting. I'm going to Maui with my family and friends. AGW: How do you avoid buying into the hype about you? K: After a day of talking to press I'm like ewww, I hate myself. Talking about yourself gets boring after a while.
