8/21/02 We're Hangin' With........Birds of Prey girls... DINA MEYER and ASHLEY SCOTT By: Lynn B.
Dina, who plays Oracle, the former Batgirl now wheelchair bound, had a lot to say about being a role model in real life and in character. "I think that Hollywood thinks that this ultra thin body type is the only type that is beautiful and that's horrible for young girls. Being a teenager is tough enough as it is. Then you look at these models and beauty magazines and see that the "beautiful" girls are six feet and 90 pounds. I will never be that. So, if I can encourage girls to be anything it's to love what they've been given and make the best of their body type. It's about embracing who you are and be healthy and feel good". About
her Oracle character Dina says, "She's a genius. She's the backbone
of the Birds of Prey. She keeps everybody on track. She was Batgirl,
a wonderful superhero and has now come into this horrible disability but
she grew from it and got stronger from it. She found her calling from
this. She was running in Batman's shoes and it took her getting shot,
paralyzed and confined to a wheelchair to find out who she really was
and become a better person than she ever could have been. That's really
wonderful. She could have said, 'I don't have legs. I can't kick xxx.
I'm done'. She didn't. She's the new, improved Barbara Gordon and I salute
The character's disability was a challenge Dina welcomed. She doesn't pretend to know what it is really like. "At the end of the day I can get up and walk away. I'm not living that life. When I first was cast, I got in a wheelchair and wheeled around the lot to see how people acted toward me. And, yeah, they were cordial and they moved out of my way and they looked at me with sympathetic eyes. I had to go up the ramp at the restaurant and I'm banging into tables and chairs. But, when lunch was over, I could always get out of the chair. I'm a very active person. I look forward to the snow so I can go snowboarding. I look forward to the sun so I can go rollerblading. If a day came when I couldn't look forward to doing those things, I don't know what I would do". Ashley, naturally slim, is into cooking, watching the food channel on t.v. and horseback riding. She wasn't a fan of the comic but took learning about the Huntress character seriously. "I read her character background. This girl went through a lot. She lost her mother and there's a lot of anger behind that. I have a lot of friends who've lost parents. They're angry at the time. They gave me a little rundown but I just made it up and I hope it works for the fans". Being a rebel with an attitude was something that came naturally to the actress. Part of her own anger stemmed from a problem with dyslexia. "I've always been a good kid. I was raised incredibly well, I'm a loving person but when I was younger I gave [rebellion] a good go. I was very active but I was dyslexic and had a really hard time at school. You have some anger from that. I think a lot of my rebellion came from being angry from the get-go. I'm so thankful that nowadays there are ways to detect it early". Ashley's reading problem still effects her work today but she copes beautifully. "I have a hard time retaining the lines. Even on set I make mistakes but I'm okay with that. Writing is weird. I have trouble with print so I write cursive and in my mind that writes properly. I'll read a paragraph and go off but I'll read it again. I try to get my scripts a week earlier and work 3 times harder. But I make it. Other actors flub their lines too". Ashley admitted that her rebellion started at an early age with tattoos and a tongue-piercing. "Mom was not impressed. I was young and thought it was hip and cool. I read for a Disney film so I took it out and I couldn't talk well. Now, for this show, they like it but I have a fear that I'll be 30 years old [she's 25] with my tongue pierced. My tattoo is a phoenix. I got the first when I was 16. I hid it for years. My mom saw the tattoo on my back through a white dress and I had to come clean. I'm done for now. I made a promise that when I'm 50, if I want another one we'll see". Both characters
will be doing martial arts with flair. We'll see Oracle in action as Batgirl
in flashback. "She'll be seen in plenty of action", says Dina,
"but, the biggest challenge for me right now is the technical aspect
of filming in a power wheelchair. I have a little remote control thing
but it doesn't necessarily do what you want it to and you can mess up
an entire shot. We'll blame it on the chair. It wasn't me". Ashley,
who jumps tall buildings in a single bound, has been training. "I
learned Tae Kwon Do and gymnastics and I have a trainer. I do as many
stunts as I can. Right now I'm working on the back handspring". The
hot costume she wears in the pilot will be altered for the series. "It
was hot but it was kind of uncomfortable. We're going to make it more
street clothing, boots and jeans. A bustier isn't the most logical thing
to fight in. Both ladies expressed a solid desire to be true to their characters in honor of the many fans of the comic and the Batman universe. "I want to be as accurate an Oracle as I can for the DC [comic] fans", said Dina. "There's such a huge fan following. I want to do right by them. I don't want to let them down". Dina always checks out what the fans say on the net. She's really into it. "I'm a cyber junkie. There's somebody named Empress Vader who likes Ashley. I go on
the boards. I would say 95 percent of what I've read has been positive
in regard to me being Oracle. People seem happy I'm playing her. But,
there's this one SHADM guy. He is so bitter and so evil and says the nastiest
things about the show. He's judging everything on the fact that Batman
"fled". Batman would never flee". |
