Brittany Snow:

‘60’s “Peacenik” Joins “The Pacifier”

by Lynn B.

Brittany Snow in THE PACIFIERYou know her as pert, opinionated good girl Meg Pryor on NBC’s 1960’s drama/music series “American Dreams”. Blonde, blue-eyed Brittany Snow is certainly sweet but wants us to know that she is ready to show us a few new character traits. The 18-year-old actress (she’ll be 19 in March) joins fellow TV stars Lauren Graham, Brad Garrett and Faith Ford to give Navy Seal Vin Diesel a whole new breed of problems as he takes on the protection of some siblings in danger in the new family action film The Pacifier.

Brittany plays Zoe Plummer, a teen-rebel type whose short short skirts prim Meg Pryor wouldn’t be allowed to wear. Wearing a cute checked jacket, a little crystal cross, jeans and gold flats studded with “gems”, the actress sat down with us for an exclusive chat in L.A.’s Century City recently and we dished about everything from keeping it real in Hollywood to her boxing lessons (move over Hilary Swank) to “beating up” Vin Diesel, to what she wants in a boyfriend, her pet name for her car, her driver’s training disaster, her encounter with Usher and the future of “American Dreams”. Pull up a chair.

AGW: Zoe’s guy tries to climb into her window. When you were growing up, did you ever have any boyfriends climbing up the side of your house?

Brittany: (laughs) No. I actually had a house where that would be completely impossible. It was brick and with no vines or anything.

AGW: He’d have to be Spider-Man.

Brittany: I wish. That would have been cool. But there were all those guys (in the film) that are really ghetto and all down with it and everything and Kyle (Schimd), who plays my boyfriend in the movie, is actually one of my really good friends. We still hang out sometimes and I really rag on him for that. He doesn’t talk like that in real life.

AGW: Any guys climbing up to your window now?

Brittany: No. Not the guys that I want. I had a longtime boyfriend for two and a half years. While I was in Canada (shooting), he was there too but now we’re not together. His name is Kyle too.

AGW: What would be your ideal date activity, especially with someone new?

Brittany: Probably I would love to just have a really nice dinner with them. Get to know them a little bit and then go out and do something fun afterwards like go to a party. If it’s an afternoon date, I just love going to the park or to the beach or driving down PCH and hanging out. What I used to do with my ex-boyfriend is we would take like five disposable cameras and drive down PCH and just take pictures; artistic ones and funny ones and just stop and have lunch and drive back.

AGW: What qualities does a guy have to have if you’re going to date him?

Brittany: He definitely has to make me laugh. He has to be protective. I like feeling like I can just trust him and I can be with him a feel okay and feel like he’s going to be there for me and be supportive. Just a really good personality; someone who is in charge of the situation. I like all that. But, somebody who is really fun and they have to keep up with me because I’m all over the place. I’m a little ADD sometimes. They would have to know how to handle that.

AGW: Back to The Pacifier. Could you actually chat with Vin Diesel between takes?

Brittany: Vin is really the nicest guy. We were really lucky because we got to know him really well.

AGW: How did Vin help you with your “fight” with him?

Brittany: The weird thing is I thought it was just a kick and I take boxing so I was saying to the stunt coordinator, ‘I can totally do this. It’s just a kick’. But, there were rehearsals involved and Vin was like ‘okay, this is how it’s going to have to do down’. He was really serious about it. I thought, ‘this is really weird’ but I think he was really scared that I was going to actually kick him. But it all worked out. We did rehearsals. It was very unsuccessful because I didn’t get to really kick him. He grabbed me before. But it was really cool to be able to say that I tried to beat up Vin Diesel. It’s among the top ten things I like. It’s cool.

AGW: Was Vin good with the babies on the set?

Brittany: He was so good with the kids on the set. He just knew exactly how to handle them. The baby would cry and Vin would hold him and do all these weird sounds and the baby would stop crying. It was really cute. He was really good with the kids. Sometimes you would see him going around the set with a kid. We were like ‘why isn’t he in his trailer’? He was playing around with the kids the entire time.

AGW: Did you work with Vin on the sensitive scenes between you?

Brittany: We talked about it a little bit. I think it was kind of cool because we didn’t think it was going to be that emotional and I don’t think Vin knew I was going to be that emotional. They shot my side first then turned around on him and he was like ‘wow. Now I know what this scene is going to be like’. It was really cool. He’s such an amazing actor and it was cool to have a whole different take on everything and get away from the comedy a little bit. It was fun.

AGW: You were not a high school flake like your Pacifier character. You got good grades?

Brittany: Yeah. I was a straight A student basically because my mom was a teacher and my parents were overachievers so I couldn’t come home with anything other than that. Definitely, like any teenager, I’ve had my teenage rebellious moments of wanting my way and things like that and I kind of played that character also in “Guiding Light” so I drew a lot from that.

AGW: Do you still belong to any dance troupes?

Brittany: When I go to New York I take a few classes just to get back into it but, for the most part I haven’t been taking many classes lately but I would love to get back into dance. I actually was thinking about it the other day. It’s one of my definite passions.

AGW: You also sing. You don’t have the passion for a singing career as well like Hilary Duff or Lindsay Lohan?

Brittany: No. I do sing and I do dance but, if anything, what I would do is just do a song on the soundtrack of my movie. It would be there and, if people liked the song it would be like ‘oh, I wonder who sang that? Oh, it’s Brittany, weird’. But, I would not make a career out of it. I want to be an actress, not really a performer of all genres.

AGW: Your character Zoe is having trouble getting her driver’s permit. Did you do well or badly in driver’s training?

Brittany: Actually, when I took driver’s training when I was fifteen, I was really bad at it. I never thought I was going to be able to drive. The first time I even went out and started driving, I hit a bus with my driver’s ed coach. I can really identify (with my character). I was one of those girls who’d say ‘I can’t. I’m going to take a limo everywhere’. Actually now I’m pretty good. I got to do a lot of my own (driving) stunts in the movie too and I got to drive really fast.

AGW: You mentioned that you hit a bus in driver’s training. Do you still have the same car?

Brittany: Yeah. I still have the same car I hit the bus in. I’ve had the same car since I was fifteen. It’s an Acura RSX. It’s name is Sexy Lexie the RSXie. I named it and I love it. I still have the same car and all my friends are like ‘Oh, my God, you need a new car. You’re in a movie. You should have like a Benz or something’. And I just haven’t gotten around to getting a new car and I don’t really care because I love my car.

AGW: What do you do with your friends when you are just kicking back?

Brittany: We have a lot of fun. We hang out. We go to parties. We go to movies. There’s definitely my best girlfriends who kind of are like the “Sex in the City” girls. We always get together for lunches. Like before I came here (to the press day) I had a lunch with my girlfriends where we talked about the weekend and what happened on Friday and Saturday night and got the gossip. I have great friends out here so we’re always together doing things like bowling and running and hiking and things like that.

AGW: Do you have a workout routine that you have to follow?

Brittany: I do. I box on Saturdays. I do Yoga on Sundays. Regular boxing. It’s in Pasadena. I work with a trainer named Tree and it’s very intense, hardcore, nothing fluffy or Hollywood about it. I love that. Then, during the week I alternate between spinning and running and Tae Bo which I love.

AGW: You are pretty athletic. Are you thinking about one day doing one of those action girl movies?

Brittany: Oh, I would love that! I was so bummed when Million Dollar Baby came out and it wasn’t in my age range because I would really have loved to do that. Anything like that of course.

AGW: What’s going to be on a CD that you would burn for a road trip?

Brittany: Well, it depends If I’m going with my guy friends or my girl friends. If it’s just me, I’m going to put Linkin’ Park, Snow Patrol. I love The Killers. I love Modest Mouse. I like pretty much everything. I love 50 Cent and I love all different types of music. I like Papa Roach. I have a very eclectic list.

AGW: Let’s talk “American Dreams”. Who was the coolest person you’ve met on the show?

Brittany: I really liked Kelly Clarkson. We got along really well. Jennifer Love Hewitt was really sweet and I went to a Golden Globe party the other day and I was walking past Usher thinking he’d never remember who I was and he was like ‘hey! Britt. Don’t do that to me. Don’t dis me like that’. And I was like looking around thinking he was talking to Britney Spears or something and he was like ‘yeah. I would never forget a pretty face like that. Come here and give me a hug’. And I was like ‘oh my God’. He was like ‘I loved you on your show’. He was really nice and an amazing performer so we were really lucky to have some great people who have been a part of the show.

AGW: You have a background in dance. Did you have to learn all those funky 1960’s dances like the Jerk?

Brittany: Yeah, I grew up doing all that stuff because I was obsessed with the ‘50’s. I had sock hops for birthday parties. So I’ve always done the Twist and stuff. It was pretty natural and, with my parents doing it all the time, I’d just copy them. Not very pretty.

AGW: How hard is it to do a TV show and movies and have time for a life?

Brittany: Well, the weird thing about last year was “American Dreams” was finished and the day that it was finished I flew to Canada and did The Pacifier for four months and then the day that finished I flew back and got on set that day. So, I haven’t had a break in a year. So now I have nothing to do and I’m like ‘what am I doing?’ On the movie, it was a lot different than TV because I got the chance to just sit and rehearse whereas on “American Dreams” it’s just constant so I think movies are a lot more relaxed. That would be something I would enjoy doing but I like both a lot.

AGW: What is the status of the show now (Feb)?

Brittany: It’s really on the bubble right now. It’s in a bad situation because a lot of people aren’t watching it and we aren’t getting the sponsorship. The fans of the show are trying to keep it on the air. It’s moving from Sunday nights to Wednesday nights starting in March at 8:00 trying to see how that’s going to work out. If that doesn’t work out then we’ll see what happens.

AGW: We’ve seen you in Meg Pryor’s conservative wardrobe and your character in Pacifier has the little short skirts and little heels. Is any of that you or what is your personal style?

Brittany: My personal style is a little bit of both. My friends tend to describe me as Preppy, Girlie. It is definitely a little more than how Meg would dress and I like the short skirts. But a few of my outfits in The Pacifier, I wasn’t extremely comfortable with because they were a little showy. But I don’t think I would wear Zoe’s short skirt.

AGW: Your character in “American Dreams” has stood up against her family for a cause she believes in. Is there any cause you believe in that you would fight for?

Brittany: Definitely. Lots of things. Being really true to yourself is important. I’m a very strong supporter of being who you are and not falling into the whole Hollywood vibe. There’s a lot of people out here to just have to get this or that car and be a “somebody”. I’m really into just hanging out with my friends and not caring about that. Also, making choices in your life that are going to work for you and not follow anybody else; whether it’s what your parents want you to do or your friends. Just follow your heart. I definitely stand up for myself when it comes to that kind of stuff.

AGW: Are you actively trying to find a role to ditch the “goodie, goodie” image?

Brittany: Well, a lot of people do see me as a goodie goodie. But, I don’t really care because I know I’m not…that much. I do have very strong morals and like to keep it cool but I think, when upcoming projects come, I want to do something that’s really challenging and if that entails doing something edgy and something a little bit more provocative then I am totally up for that but it has to be challenging. I have to feel like that’s really going to stretch me in a new way in acting and if that’s a really goodie, goodie part too, then I’m open to doing that.

AGW: Are you developing anything for yourself movie-wise yet?

Brittany: There’s definitely and lot of scripts right now coming in that I’m really looking at and I love and I’m very connected to. I’m just going through them. A lot of them are independents. A few are not . But, I’m just having faith that whatever’s going to happen will happen and I’m going to work really hard for it.

AGW: You’ve been in a lot of ensemble casts on a soap and then on “American Dreams” and now The Pacifier. Are you looking forward to just doing something with just one guy and a girl?

Brittany: Yeah. The cool thing about it is I love doing things with an ensemble of actors and having one scene or one aspect that really pops and people are like ‘wow’ and I’m just flying under the radar. But there will be that one project that will really spike it for me. I’m still looking for that project. It doesn’t just have to be a guy and a girl but that one thing that will pop me above the radar. I definitely feel that that’s in the future but it doesn’t have to be any time soon.

AGW: What would you say to young girls who have talent but aren’t sure what to do with it?

Brittany: The advice I would give them is definitely go for it if you feel like you are really prepared. Not doing it for the celebrity aspect because that will really rip you apart, but doing it because you really love acting and it gives you this rush and you just don’t want to do anything else. It’s really hard work. It’s not all as glamorous as it’s cracked up to be. But, you should definitely go for it and never stop trying if that’s what you really feel you want to do. I’ve come to know, with my friends and myself included, if you work for it long enough, it’s gonna happen. It may just take a little bit longer.

AGW: Who was your favorite guest star on “American Dreams”?

Brittany: I think Usher as Marvyn Gaye was amazing. Kelly Clarkson as Brenda Lee was awesome. She’s such a sweet, sweet person. Really delightful. And Jennifer Love Hewitt was really cute and a really great dancer. She even sprained her ankle and kept on going because she’s such a good performer. She did Nancy Sinatra “These Boots Are Made for Walkin’” and those boots were not made for walking. We’ve been really lucky to have such great people. Alicia Keys. She was awesome. She’s only 22 and she had this poise and grace about her. She was so nice to everybody and really cool.

AGW: Would you go right into another TV series?

Brittany: I think right now, I would really like to focus on movies for a while and see what happens. If that doesn’t work out, I’m totally not opposed to doing TV. I love TV but I feel like there’s just so much more out there with movies right now; new characters and kind of challenging myself a little bit. I feel like I’ve been on the best TV show. I loved “American Dreams” and I really thought it was the best TV show I’ve ever seen. How do you top that? I don’t know if it’s possible but I’m definitely up for anything.

AGW: What about the 1960’s are you really glad doesn’t exist today and what would you like to still see today?

Brittany: I think the one thing that I’m so glad we don’t have is how people treated each other when it came to race, class and things like that. We’ve really come a long way where being friends with an African-American was just not heard of and now it’s just completely normal. The same thing with a girl dancing on a television show. That was just unheard of and you had a rebellious daughter if you did that. Now, it’s just ‘go for it! Go on the TV show’. Things that I like in the ‘60’s are that people really appreciated things that happened back then more than they did now. There are a lot of things that people take for granted now. Times have changed. People were just a little more simple.

AGW: If you had a boyfriend that was doing something you just couldn’t get behind like Meg did, would you break up with him?

Brittany: When you’re in love, it’s so hard to just make the choice of never wanting to see them again no matter what the person does. I felt for Megan that way. Yeah, he did this terrible thing (helped burn down a draft board office) but he kind of did it to protect her. He’s a bad guy but he loves her. For me it would depend on the situation and how bad it was and how cute the guy was.. just kidding.

AGW: What if what he’s doing might put you in danger?

Brittany: I think definitely your safety comes first and sometimes you don’t have a good judgment of character because you are in love with the person. Then, definitely I’d talk to a few people about it and get my friends’ advice because they can see it from an outside point of view. If the guy is putting me in danger then it doesn’t matter, you have to break up.

AGW: What would you like to say to “American Dreams” fans.

Brittany: I would like to say thank you to anybody who watched “American Dreams”. I’m just really grateful to anybody who is a fan of the show. It has been an amazing three years and I loved every minute of it. Hopefully, the fans will keep following me as I go on to other things.
