We're Hangin' With....The Voice of LILO!

DAVEIGH CHASE

Eleven-year-old Daveigh (pronounced Da-VAY) who voices Lilo in the film Lilo and Stitch, is a busy young actress who also manages to keep up a singing career. She's worked with famous composer John Williams and appeared as an opening act for Reba McEntire. She likes all kinds of music and writing her own song lyrics. She would love to do some R&B and pop.

Daveigh has been in a lot of films like R.L. Stine's "Haunted Lighthouse" in which she plays a flying ghost, and t.v. shows like "E.R.", "The Practice" and "Angel" but she's thrilled to be the voice of Lilo in Disney's Lilo and Stitch, a job she started at age eight. Daveigh talked to reporters recently about her career and voice role as the lonely Hawaiian girl.

The young star has big plans. "I'm singing and acting. Hopefully I can win a Grammy for singing and songwriting. I want to win an Annie award for Lilo & Stitch." Daveigh has never had an acting or singing lesson and thinks her talent is just a gift from God. But there is a family precedent. "My grandpa could yodel. So can I. (gives a demonstration). But I learned it from LeAnn Rimes' song "Cowboy Sweetheart" a lot. Taught myself with tapes". Daveigh did sing the National Anthem for the film "A.I." but it got edited out.

We asked Daveigh how she felt about playing Lilo. "They showed me Lilo and I thought she was so cute and adorable. Then I read what she gets into. I was like, Oh. We both love Elvis. She likes to surf and I like to body board. We both have long hair. I met Andreas (Deja) the animator of Lilo. He videotaped me and worked off of my mannerisms and put them into Lilo."
Lilo's accent was pretty much Daveigh's own voice. The Lilo hula dolls also
Have Daveigh's voice.

The actress said that she thinks Lilo is very "real". "She gets picked on and gets in fights with her big sister. Stitch is destructive and I'm sure a lot of little kids are kind of destructive". The family values in the film really impressed Daveigh. "The film is based on 'ohana'(the Hawaiian word and concept for family). Ohana means family and family means nobody gets left behind or forgotten. I've got that stuck in my head. I'm an only child".

Daveigh told us that she worked by herself while recording her voice for Lilo and didn't meet anyone else in the film until after it was finished or toward the ending. Being a home-schooled, only child makes her happy to work with others. Her favorite Disney films are Beauty and the Beast and Dumbo and she has two pets. "I have a dog named Rosie, a Skiperkee and a cat named Kiki but my dog doesn't behave like Stitch. He can sit and roll over".

Coming out soon for Daveigh is another Disney film, the English-dubbed version of the popular Japanese anime classic Spirited Away. She plays the starring role of Chihiro. She'll be in the live action remake of Ring, a Japanese horror film to be released this fall. " I play the lead Samara. It's creepy and R-rated".

Her plans for the summer? "We're going to take a road trip. I haven't been to Hawaii yet either". Daveigh's birthday is July 24th. She looks forward to being twelve.
